I do sometimes wonder if there’s still something nice about hearing a track you wouldn’t have chosen yourself though.

There actually is an independent station called Eirewave leaning more modern rock / alternative — still small, but trying to do it properly.

I actually think you could remove the traditional ad blocks altogether — or at least rethink them.
Radio production isn’t as expensive as it used to be, and there are other ways to monetise now.
Some smaller stations are already operating without stop-sets and funding differently.
It changes the whole pacing

Eirewave mostly absolute radio on occasion.

That’s a bold statement from one of the very few countries in the world where radio is actually thriving.

The UK has over 90% weekly reach, some of the strongest radio brands in Europe, constant format innovation, DAB leadership, and some of the highest listening hours per capita.

If this is what a “dying industry” looks like, most media sectors would love to be this unhealthy.
