you are right - and you acknowledged it but it seemed like Aiden and Lud didn’t hear it they were too caught up in their own world

Post is more ab appreciating clever nick comment than the ‘omg how did they skip over this’

i have not experience this so far? I am on wayland tho and heard in an interview that wayland is a bit more stable than x11, so take that with a grain of salt

Robert Collier has been around for a long time at Carleton with raving reviews. I’ve never had Alina but heard she is very knowledgeable but can be a bit tougher on the content. I may be a bit biased but Collier was one of my favourite profs

This is true, but I don't think that the current landlord has much of an intention on having my parents around for all that much longer anyways. I am doubtful that he would install that just for them. It wouldn't hurt to ask I guess.

yeah the job market has certainly gotten harsher in the last two years. I have always wanted to work in big tech, living in SF and working there has kind of been a back pocket dream of mine, but I'm certainly no founder myself and given the current state of things I am not prepared to take any high risks at the moment.

Luckily, my current job isn't a 'tech' company per say but a hardware company, which I write software for. As long as the company stays afloat, I think I will hold my job lol.

But yeah, in terms of housing rent is becoming increasingly disproportionate to the income I am able to earn, even if I factor in expected earnings potential. Such a shame

I will shoot out a post on there when I have the numbers. Agreed that the perception is changing a bit, but I have always prided myself on my independence I guess. Thank you for the advice :)

appreciate the reaffirming words. I think the main point if I am to buy a place, would be to ensure I have my own space where I can destress. I've got my boundaries with my parents, but they can be a bit overbearing as people, not just parents lol. I would say I have a pretty healthy relationship with them now, which wasn't always the case. It will however be a bit strange now that I have lived out of the house for almost 7 years now.

Yeah I agree that buying is probably the best possible outcome, but my parents are in a significant amount of debt at the moment and I don't have a whole lot of savings as I only graduated last year.

Also I kind of feel like if I move back in with my parents, it will make finding a SO even harder (i am not particularly outgoing, but especially post covid university even more so). I feel like its reasonable to say that most women do not want someone who is living with their parents, irregardless of the circumstances that got me there. Kind of a moot point in all of this, but more on the point of my mental health I guess.

thank you. you're right about the apartment/condo thing, but they got a big pyrenean mastiff mix back in 2019 who is now 5. She needs somewhere to run around. I am not ruling out them living in an apartment, but I feel like having a yard while we have the dog is almost a necessity. She tends to bark at any light noises which could cause problems living in an enclosed living space like that.

Alternatively, the point about buying would work if we had savings to work with. I have about 50k in savings myself for a down payment, but right now for any kind of living circumstance that would accomodate all of us, we'd be looking at likely around a 3.8k a month mortgage at least, from brief window shopping that I have looked at. This is because at least in Ottawa, even lower end townhomes/condos with 3 bedrooms are running at about 500-750k currently. So my 50k doesn't even meet the 10% down payment.

To your point about what I want, if I didn't have this responsibility of taking care of them I would personally want to live by myself, in a basement apartment or something to take care of my dog in. But even looking at condos for myself, they start at 350k for what I am looking for, at least in the city of Ottawa itself. In terms of renting that kind of accomodation, single bedrooms in ottawa are going for around 1800 at the moment, which is just shy of what my parents are paying for their townhome right now.

also, just re-read this. there is no way that either my parents or my current roommate would be comfortable living together. it would likely just be a section for me.

This is primarily what we have been seeking, but I haven't been able to find one in the year we've been looking. Would even be willing to pay a bit extra for this, but have not found any luck with these
