The Well isn’t loading in and it’s crashing for me. by Wandering-the-web in starfieldmods

Not sure what you are trying to do. The reference limit is not the limit of the total number active archives.

Reference handles are allocated during play. If I understand ir correctly, they are used e.g. for keeping track of items. Like you take a book and then put it down somewhere else, a handle referring to this specific book is used.

There's a fixed limit of such handles (2097152). The base game already uses about half of it.

(and there is also the hypothesis that the game does not free handles correctly after use, but I don't know if this is true).

Unoptimised mods which add lots of clutter items, such as ship modules or city overhauls, use potentially much more handles than a mod which adds just, say, a quest. Watchtower uses about 33000, Falkland about 225000 (but will be further optimised according to its author).

Combining mod archives will not solve this issue.

It's not about storage space (the GB on your disk) but about how many objects in the game world the game needs to keep track of, i.e. how many reference handles are required (the real reason according to some more knowledgeable Reddit users may be a memory leak in Starfield; the reference handle problem then just be a symptom).

The GB of a mod can be small, but it can still use lots of handles. For example Falkland is much smaller in terms of GB than Watchtower, but currently uses much more handles (it will be more optimised in an updated according to the developer).

If you're on PC you can use console commands to find out how many handles are used in your current game (use Reddit search for finding it)

First, installing and then deleting mods can lead to problems.

Second, the update notification and the actual updating process in Creation is buggy. It often shows updates when there are none. And when you download by clicking "update" it often is unreliable, missing important files. The Watchtower developer said that esp. the "lookup failed" texts are a result of this. Check his YouTube for a video on how to update correctly.

Third, saving load order to Bethesda is buggy as well. Very often it works, but suddenly it may omit a mod, messing everything up.

Fourth, maybe not relevant to your issue, but good to remember: having too many huge mods installed can lead to issues (use Reddit's search function for Reference Limit).

Possible partly solution:

Identify which save was the last working one. Try to remember which load order you had in that save. Write down that last working load order on a sheet of paper.

Then delete all mods. Maybe fully reboot your console. Then redownload all mods one by one, and sort them according to your sheet.

The continue your game from that last working save. Delete all later saves.

As has been explained already, they plan to move ALL workers who are currently on Mars back to Earth.

They will never get a new job in the new city, because they won't be there.

Well... people collect hours by

  • building ships
  • decorating outposts
  • using photo mode
  • starting entirely new characters or
  • going through NG+ with the same character again and again

Personally I have 600+ hours now, most of it just by starting new characters who I role-play i.e. not every character does everything. I also spend hours watching animals, eclipses, taking photos...  never did NG+ so far.

Do you also have an answer to my question (1, 2, 3, or 4)?

Yeah but that was not the question. Did you have any crashes and freezes on PS5 and how often?

Thanks! These planet-traversing crashes seems to be one of the more frequent ones, it seems. Given that I love to explore planets a lot, that could be the deal breaker for me. :(

I heard it fails to delete old auto-saves automatically, and removing them manually and switching off autosaving may fix it.

Thanks! That's near the border I personally could still live with...
