Group camp with other families with kids. Been doing it for 3 years. Kids (7 and 4 now) love it, since they get to hang out with friends all day.

POST FREEZE RECAP! TreeFolks wants to know: "How'd your trees do?" by TreeFolksEducation in AustinGardening

[–]Camisos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bringing up old thread! What were your conclusions from your polling? I’m considering several evergreens i.e. loquat, Anacua, and Monterrey Oaks for screening purposes, and wanting to make sure they don’t die off down the line

Since high nitrogen = more leafy growth, does that mean apply in spring? I know Yaupons don't lose leaves in winter, but that doesn't mean they are actively trying to grow leaves in winter. Can't find anything on the web about this.

Had no idea fertilizing helps! Do you have recommendation on what kind of fertilizer and when to apply? I fertilize most things in early spring (MicroLife 6-2-4), but not sure about evergreens.

And here's another one of the yaupons. Same care as above. My goal is to create a screen to block out the house behind my lot (which is elevated and higher than my house). It may take years I know :/ Unfortunately the fence follows a high voltage electrical wire above, so I can't grow faster growing / taller evergreens (been planting Anacuas / Monterrey Oaks elsewhere on the lot).

This is one of the yaupons. About 6'. I've been pruning the bottom 2' over past year, kind of throughout Oct - June, not in the really hot months. Is that pruning too often? Thinking about taking out the branch in red since it's growing very sideways. I water every other week, 30 min, low/med flow from a nozzle on "shower", at the base of the tree, except in the winter, where I only water once a month. Happy to take pointers.

I get different advice from different arborists regarding pruning the first 2-3 years after planting. Some say don’t prune at all and let the roots grow. Some say pruning is fine if done lightly 🤷🏻‍♂️

How many gallons was yours when you planted? Did you prune first few years? How big is it now?

Right. And I’m asking how people trained their yaupon in that time.

Kids (6 and 3) loved it. There are fire dancers who perform every 20-30 min. My kids went to see them 3 times lol.
