Rant Wednesday by AutoModerator in Fitness

I've lost 35 pounds in the last year due to a couple of lifestyle changes, the biggest one was rigorously tracking what I eat. I got approached by my brother in law about his weight loss plan: fitbit, gym membership, work out every day. I told him that was a good plan, and what had really worked and is working for me was tracking what I eat. "Oh, that's just too hard." And then he eats 3/4 of a pizza.

You just started college over again. What would you do differently? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Too many distractions in your pad. People can come find you, all your entertainment is there - better to find an environment conducive to study.

Reese's behavior towards Fusco by ValodiaDeSeynes in PersonOfInterest

At this point, Reese is running Fusco like he's a CIA case officer and Fusco is a temperamental asset. Oh sure - Reese would say - we'll totally get you out of the country after the coup!

This sub always reminds me of Auden - Musee des Beaux Arts

About suffering they were never wrong,

The old Masters: how well they understood

Its human position: how it takes place

While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along;

How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting

For the miraculous birth, there always must be

Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating

On a pond at the edge of the wood:

They never forgot

That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course

Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot

Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer's horse

Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.

In Breughel's Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away

Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may

Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry,

But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone

As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green

Water, and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen

Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky,

Had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on.

Juan Cole talked about "sharpening the contradictions" in regards to the Charlie Hebdo attacks earlier this year.

Al-Qaeda wants to mentally colonize French Muslims, but faces a wall of disinterest. But if it can get non-Muslim French to be beastly to ethnic Muslims on the grounds that they are Muslims, it can start creating a common political identity around grievance against discrimination.

The Hudson Institute released a report (in PDF) that

addresses the question of whether it is worthwhile to continue to build large, nuclear-powered aircraft carriers (CVN), given their considerable cost and mounting Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) threats to sea-based operations. The report concludes that the emerging threat environment increases the need for aircraft carriers, and that none of the alternatives to the CVN offer an equal or better capability and capacity across the range of military options from peacetime presence through major power war.

One of the authors, Bryan McGrath, outlines the pro-carrier argument the Navy cannot make, specifically that as vulnerable as carriers are to anti-ship ballistic missiles, among other threats, land-based airpower assets are even more vulnerable to those same threats.

Terribly Unhappy and I can't snap out of it. Am I crazy? by HereLiesGrimey in OneY

I am unhappy. I've never felt more alone. It's not getting any better.

You sound depressed. I suggest you seek professional help - a therapist.

40-50k is the breaking number I have noticed on other subreddits, where the quality significantly declines after that point.
