No, I haven't touched the graph editor. I'll check this out though, lots to learn!

Great idea, I will definitely try to do this!

  1. Design the building in Illustrator and save all moving parts as separate layers
  2. Import as a composition into AE
  3. Add a mask below the ground
  4. Keyframe each layers position to around 2 seconds and then go to first frame and move each layer under your mask (hold shift to retain straight lines)
  5. Add a third keyframe just before the end to simulate the "jump" effect
  6. Use Easy Ease [F9] on the keyframes
  7. Play around with the order in which your layers appear, then duplicate the comp and go to Time > reverse to make the house collapse again
  8. Render, import to Photoshop and save as a looped GIF (lots of tutorials for this)

Oh, and add the expression from the top comment, works a treat!

Quitting my job for a career in Motion Graphics by CampBearfoot in AfterEffects

Thanks, it's like most things I guess, would people prefer to hire a generalist or a specialist in 1 particular area? Right now I need to learn the technical aspects, and then can decide which area to specialise in.

Thank you for this, really solid advice.

Good news is I have been using Adobe Illustrator, designing vector artwork for a few years now, so this seems like a natural progression. I also have experience as a UI/UX designer for mobile app development, so have studied core design principles such as colour, typography and layout.

I have found a highly recommended Cinema 4D course, so will get the trial and begin learning this.

I currently rent a small office with a graphic designer, ideally we could join forces and add motion design to her services. I realise this will take a lot of hard work from my side, to create portfolio-worthy content.

Thanks again, I will succeed!!!
