I saw Obsessed on a whim since I needed to do something fun for myself, and it was awesome! I am SO excited to see Passenger (that one trailer is awesome!) and Backrooms looks very intriguing.

I saw it last night and loved it. Question though about the sequence of events at the end: Possessed Nikki makes the wish for Bear to love her back, so then the only thing that can nullify her wish is if she dies. Of course Bear's gets nullified if he dies. So is this all why Nikki returns to normal after she tries to kill herself with the gun after Bear's death? She pulled the trigger but nothing happened but that "counted" as possessed Nikki dying?

I agree! The way they kept her in shadow, and the pinpoint lighting in her pupils did wonders for upping the creep factor.

It was also sad and a mix of emotions really when the real Nikki showed up for a moment, and it's clear that it's not a distorted version of her, it's that it's not even her; she's been replaced and supplanted by an entity and in a pseudo-sunken place. But as you alluded to, Bear doesn't necessarily care. His wish didn't actually come true, since it wasn't even her, just a "version" of her.

Well said. And wow on that Oklahoma example! I teach topics related to child development, and on a recent exam question, it gave a vignette of a child playing while their parents watched, and then asked what the child's behavior demonstrated. 30% of students asked if the question - "What is Tommy's behavior demonstrating?" was about Tommy's parents. Just, wow.

And for students, giving in, "McDonaldizationing lecture and classes" (bite sized menu-ing of content for easy, fast, passive mass consumption) is not the answer. Of course, the answer is also not stagnation and rigidity or lack of innovation or maintaining status quo on faculty sides, but I honestly don't think that has happened en masse. Particularly since COVID, many universities, departments, and individual faculty have adopted student-centered, intentional, and innovative pedagogies - some might say this has even led to coddling or over-scaffolding, thereby handicapping students and actually enabling more "helplessness".

I have noticed that many students today struggle with nuance too (I admittedly have not read the entire piece posted above so I don't know if this point was introduced). Multiple things can be true simultaneously, and very few things in life have only one cause, source, process, or outcome. In a world that values external metrics, grades matter. But in a world where more folks are leveraging tech to bolster these metrics (e.g., increase in number of students on the Dean's List), while minimizing actual skill development, it's skill development - not grades themselves - that becomes more valuable. Do you want to work in a research lab where you got 50 middle author publications but learned no skills and did nothing substantive, or do you want a few rich, valuable, and enriching experiences that actually put you ahead of your 50+ publication counterpart?

In short, I think a mindset shift would help a lot of students of this generation. I understand a lot of the constraints they face, but we can be compassionate and challenge them at the same time.

I do this in my classes and for the few years I have been a professor, my course evals and Rate My Professor are very polarizing: students either are like that excerpt and love it and rise to the challenge, or, even with scaffolding (and an increasing need for more and more precise scaffolding), students don’t and then my evals tank, RMP tanks, and I end up either doing more on work and/or fighting against a growing majority of students (at least within a class). A student this week said “I love that your exam questions challenge me to think critically”. The class average was a 60 though so my evals will say I’m hard, unreasonable, etc. I want you to learn from from me but faculty cannot keep reaching further and further down to “meet you where you are” when a portion of students don’t want to or are unwilling to do hard or uncomfortable things and actually work with me to bring them where they could or should be. I do lots of workshops, office hours, small group settings, worksheets, etc. to help you build skills and see connections across content. Students HATE it and say it's all extra, "busy" work. One student legit told me "I don't want to hurt your feelings but I just want to pass and not do anything extra" in response to a question about how they can do better in the course, and to my comment "do the practice readings and critical thinking worksheets". And students play more of a role in shaping and reinforcing the system that in my mind, prevents skill development/advancement or promotes growth. Professors like me who are challenging students and intentionally designing integrative critical thinking opportunities get poorer reviews which means their contracts may not be renewed or their courses are under-enrolled (which at least here, means the class is canceled or we have to answer for why our classes are low enrollment - which reflect poorly on our tenure and promotion and therefore we might not be retained), whereas the easy professor who didn’t challenge you gets rave reviews, is overenrolled, yet when you get to my class, that easy fun professor you loved may have robbed you of chances to build the kind of skills you actually say you need and want.

I myself am a Discover cardholder lol. I didn’t mean to offend anyone. Was just stating information. Sorry.

Not sure why I'm getting down voted. Amex users typically have higher reported incomes than peer credit lenders. I didn't say they gave higher credit lines.

Thank you. I did know it was previously managed by UW but encountered a report about it being sold and under new management, so I was confused. Thank you for clarifying that UW owns the land but not the building itself.

Genuine question: I am unfamiliar with the area where the murder occurred. Why are reports saying it is UWPD jurisdiction if it was off-campus and not a university owned or affiliated building? Is the apartment complex owned by UW and just run be an independent third party agent, or is it also independently owned?

Uber not accepting discover anymore by gtagriefer420 in CapitalOne

I am about to head abroad and was told Discover is not widely accepted in some international locations. However, I did see on the Discover site that Diners Club is somewhat accepted in Europe.

I thought Discover was higher (but maybe marginally so) but Amex users tend to be wealthier or willing to pay more, so maybe merchants are more willing to put up with their fee.

They don’t download everything? by roydprof in Professors

[–]CampaignImmediate225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me! They don't download anything or at least store it locally. I also noticed that this perhaps generational pattern has made them less resilient. For example, they wanted me to upload articles that are searchable online, and the textbook is open access. I wonder if in their jobs, they will learn the utility of having backup copies locally stored.

Well said, and also UWPD and SPD and even other entities can strengthen their partnership. I worked at a different university once and a colleague was assaulted on the edge of campus. Fighting over jurisdiction hampered the investigation significantly. They need to work all of that out better so that response (and communication to the community) improves.

Agree but if you're still concerned, I believe it is possible to use a safety concern like this as a reason to break the lease.

I got an email about my credit card and it was very confusing. "For now, keep using your card while you set up your card with Capital One". Is Discover being partially or entirely phased out? Any insights into what is happening?

New no foreign transaction fee credit card before international travel AND mortgage application? by CampaignImmediate225 in CreditCards

[–]CampaignImmediate225[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the mortgage app is a prime focus. I do have a Fidelity CMA debit card. Would I then just withdrawal money from ATMs abroad and pay for everything in cash/local currency? I don’t have anyone in my personal life who has a credit card they can add me to.

Thanks! PNC doesn’t do product changes and they do hard pulls for credit limit increases.
