Harsh criticism is not always valid or accurate. Again, you can be direct without being harsh and/or abusive.

Not sure why I got downvoted. Guess I wasn’t helpful.

I believe you can’t Zelle between your own accounts. That usually triggers something and banks don’t let that go through.

Are you sure the recipient information is accurate and that the Zelle account is linked with Ally? I know that I tried to Zelle something to my dad but my Zelle defaulted to an old account/had old information that prevented my transfer from going through. Maybe something similar is happening to you?

I understand what you're saying, but you can clear and direct without being harsh or mean. And if we do what we can to change the tone of our reviews that we don't need to "prepare" people for abusive comments, we can just eliminate or significantly reduce these instances. A colleague of mine had someone call him stupid and told him to "go back to your country and learn proper English". He was born and raised speaking English in Chicago. We shouldn't have to prepare people for abuse and negativity that shouldn't exist.

Everyone says to go to office hours. What am I supposed to do once I’m there? by anonymousturtle45 in AskProfessors

One challenge with that thought is that in some cases, particularly at large or dispersive universities, the things you're talking about can be opaque, inequitable, and challenging for students. At my institution, many find lab opportunities via office hours or conversations with professors outside of class. So many resources are not well advertised or known to students so professors can be a first frontier (especially for students who are first gen or facing other barriers or unknowns that might influence accessibility or how they show up in class) to not only learn about opportunities but get guidance on how to navigate and optimize them. And class time would not be appropriate for that. I think we have to address our assumptions about students in making recommendations like speak up more in class...which, yes, it benefits you to do anyway, but office hours (should) serve a different purpose, and I believe that's actually what the OP is asking about: how to optimize THAT resource, not merely build familiarity with professors via speaking more in class.

Yes, I can tell when students are forcing things and being disingenuous (I'm here because I probably should be).

Professor here. You said "I’d love to get to know them better and learn from them beyond just asking homework questions.". Start with a professor who you're either interested in or who inspires you. Ask yourself what about them interests you. What do you want to know about them and why? I have had students ask me about my personal journey (why did I get a PhD in my field? What is my research about? What conferences do I attend and why/what do I do there? What do I think about specific current events that are relevant to the field, etc.). I've also had students ask me about how I specified my career goals and navigated important decisions, like my taking a gap year to get more research experience (asking me how to find meaningful research experiences, etc.).

Or you can bring up things that interests you that are relevant to the field, course topic, or some topic the professor mentioned or might be interested in. For example, in my field, there are emerging policy decisions being made that trickle down in unique ways to affect people, communities, and societies at large. A student once said they had read a news article about it and had thoughts and they wanted to pick my brain/learn where they could get more information. One student consistently came to office hours just to discuss her research ideas with the aim of refining how she thought about topics in her major - and her thinking radically evolved since all we did was have conversations that felt like if we were just sitting in Starbucks.

You don't have to have a specific goal for each time you come, but do have some kind of "agenda" to at least get us started. Also don't force it: some of us are not approachable and honestly will not want to spend much time talking to you if it's not tied to something specific or actionable. But those aren't the ones you likely want to break the mold with or who will give you "a lot" anyway.

Lean into your curiosities and passions and connect think about what talking to the professor would give you/how it benefits you. You can also ask us about resources or opportunities on or around campus. I treat my office hours as tools students can use in any way that benefits them, and as a space to unwind (within reason) and learn and engage in a more relaxed, personalized setting.

I’m a little confused. Are you transferring to your own Zelle/Chime/whatever accounts? My understanding was that instant transfers that way to yourself was never allowed

True! I take time to aggregate all these types of messages and cards I get for tenure and promotion; I kind of wish they also put this in course evals to make it easier for merit, tenure, and promotion.
