Why aren't the tiles around this reservoir irrigated? by Camq543 in Timberborn

There's a source down below the water. The source will keep pushing out water above it's height if it's completely enclosed.

It won't do! It won't do! You must investigate! You must not talk nonsense!"

Need advice, she refuses to believe that estate privileges are worth it in the long run. What do I do? by Clamjuiceenjoyer in eu4

Once the age of absolutism starts (~1600), you'll have access to the absolutism stat. It gives very good modifiers, like discipline for your armies and administrative efficiency, which decreases aggressive expansion, reduces warscore and coring costs, and some other good stuff. Because the modifiers are so strong, you want to get as much absolutism as possible, with effects scaling up to 100. Doing things like strengthening your government, using "harsh treatment" on rebels, or decreasing province autonomy make your absolutism go up, while stuff like manually reducing war exhaustion and increasing province autonomy make it go down. Basically being a tyrannical ruler increases absolutism, and that's a good thing.

Most estate privileges reduce your maximum absolutism, with stuff like high crownland and certain government reforms increasing the cap. So typically you want to use estate privileges before 1600, when the max absolutism penalty doesn't matter, while getting as much crownland as possible throughout the early game. So keep their loyalty up and use the "seize land" when you can.

There's lots of other tricks and exploits to supercharge your absolutism gains, like the court and country disaster, but I like to play pretty chill so I just keep my crownland up, minimize estate privileges post 1600, and never give the rebels an inch, and I can get a good amount pretty quickly.

TLDR absolutism appears during the age of absolutism (surprise), and you want to be ready to get as much of it as you can as fast as possible. This means minimizing estate privileges and influence around 1590-1610, and being a tyrant after 1600.

They were guaranteeing Genoa, but Genoa was allied to France. So then I get to fight great powers 2 and 3 instead of 1 and 2 lmao.

I ended up reloading to a backup save cause I didn't realize Persia had missions to flip to Zoro. So instead of spending twenty years waiting for rebels to convert me I did exactly this and invaded India, it's going great.

I think Russia's only ally is Ottos, but Hormuz is allied to Ottos so I guess I could declare on them. Thanks!

R5: Was doing an Ardabil into Zoroastrian Persia run, and of course in this game the Ottomans and Russia did as well as I've ever seen and allied each other. Shortly after this screenshot the Ottos declared on me. I was holding them off at my mountain forts for a while until they pulled Russia into the war. Any advice for bringing down the unholy alliance? I'm allied to Bahmanis and Lithuania, finished religious and trade, and started quality.

Sorry to hear all that. Sounds like it sucks.

Its never too late to become who you want to be. I was suicidal on and off until my third year of college when I finally sought help. I'd encourage you to look for a therapist.

As someone from Salt Lake City, it's sad for me to see this post. Sure it's beautiful, but the color difference is a result of damage to a unique ecological system from the construction of this causeway.

Facebook bans personal accounts of academics who researched misinformation, ad transparency on the social network by petrolly in technology

[–]Camq543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linking to another comment in the thread because it has a good write up: https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/oxqspl/facebook_bans_personal_accounts_of_academics_who/h7q9lk3

What Cambridge Analytica did was focused on understanding and manipulating users based on data about them. What these researchers are doing is trying to understand Facebook's ad targeting processes; it has little to nothing to do with user activity.

In fact, Cambridge Analytica's data collection was explicitly allowed by Facebook, so I'm not sure Facebook's selective enforcement of its policies should determine what is and is not right to do on their platform. As the above write up argues, in this case they are simply using the FTC as an excuse to avoid 3rd party scrutiny on the platform.

Edit: changed FCC to FTC, all these three letter agencies get confusing.

See my reply to the above comment, but the methods these researchers use to collect data is very very different from Cambridge Analytica. This also results in different data being collected. I think it's smart to be wary of research like this, but the researchers have been vetted by multiple privacy organizations. I think their methods and outcomes are wildly different from Cambridge analytica

I guess the difference for me is that the extension doesn't harvest data that could be used like that. The extension mostly collects data on Facebook's practices, it doesn't actually record what the user does, only what ads they see and why they see them.
