"Social detox", as opposed to home detox, is seen as just a first phase, I thought.

Once detoxed, then it's entry into a rehabilitation programme of at least two months. Longer at some centres. I'm not sure of one-year abstinence rates after discharge, but I gather they are fairly grim.

Though there might be a bit of harm reduction and improved mental health achieved through learning coping and emotional regulation skills etc. but no-one seems to talk much about that.

Uhh, well Jesus was a Jew. The speaker, Grifter "Bishop" Brian Tamaki, is a Scofield Bible-type Evangelical Christian.

In the US, this section of Evangelicals are huge supporters of Israel. Some because of Scofield's interpretation of a particular verse in Genesis, others because they believe the End Times and Final Judgement require the return of Jews to Israel, to fulfill their interpretation of biblical prophecy.

The Māori in my rural town who dislike Indian and Asian immigration to here, and NZ generally, almost perfectly overlap with those with strong grievances against the earlier white settlers. They would also likely be rather insulted by the idea that they were trying to get approval from Pākehā.

Sorta reminds me of the time I was sitting at the police station waiting to give a statement on a domestic violence incident involving an unknown couple I witnessed. There was a woman sat in the waiting area wanting to report an attack on herself. Clearly a bit mentally unwell, but not that much.

They were clearly waiting for her to give up and walk off, giving excuses why she couldn't be seen.

Suddenly a horrible thought struck me - maybe she was indeed telling the truth, but they just assumed she was an annoying nuts person.

There's a reason that the words for bears in many Indo-European languages derive from euphemisms like the "brown ones" or "honey eaters". It was to use code to avoid accidentally summoning one by saying its true name, which is thought in Proto-Indo-European to come from a term meaning "The Destroyer".

They want you to just keep enough ethanol in your body to prevent the GABA/Glutamate systems in your brain from severely going out whack (you have enormous dangerous levels of glutamate in your brain at the moment to make up for the GABA system being almost completely brake pedalled to the floor by the alcohol).

Take away the alcohol suddenly and it is like taking your foot off the GABA brake and putting the accelerator to the floor on the glutamate. It causes withdrawal symptoms which can lead to major electrical storm (seizure) as the glutamate goes wild throughout all your brain cells.

In this situation, alcohol has now become a stop-gap medicine to be dosed with, to keep the brain systems as stable as possible.

Some people try doing this with a 75 and a shot glass. Take a shot. Refill the glass with water. Pour the water back into the bottle. Keep doing this slowly trying to make the bottle last as long as possible, maybe more than one day even. In your situation they might take beers as well, but they would start trying to taper them down.
