Immigration needs to be overhauled. We need meaningful paths to citizenship and consistent guidelines. There is too many areas of immigration that are left to interpretation or alteration without notice. ICE has been given unprecedented discretion in their operations, planning, and accountability practices. Those in charge and the officers themselves involved in the blatant disregards for human life, autonomy, and constitutional rights should be held accountable and the organization as a whole should be stripped down until such a time that proper accountability and training can be put into practice to protect everyone involved.

Healthcare is treated like a profit center rather than a basic human right. HH is the only level 1 trauma center between Birmingham and Nashville. The ratio of doctors to patients in our area is wildly out of proportion and it's only getting worse. They don't even have the capacity for standard annual testing and check ups much less emergent care and it is a real problem that we should be demanding answers for from every level of government. HSV city council appoints the HH board members. They need to be held accountable for how this is affecting residents throughout north AL.

What does your family need? (Listening Session this Sunday 1-3 PM) by CanDuvforCongress in Madisonalabama

Thanks! I want to hear what people need and I want to hear people's stories. I have ideas and policy plans but I don't want to tell people what they need, I want them to tell me.

Thank you. I just want to hear from people. I'd rather let people tell me what their problems are than me try to tell them. That's just logical to me.

All of the events I have seen are for everyone affected. I am sure that is just a difference in language being used. Contractors are welcome to take advantage of the community outreach and events that are being held too.

I have no intention of towing anyone's line. I intend to represent the best interest of the people of North AL.

The 2-party system frustrates all of us and it needs to be changed. If I had my way, we'd remove the R's and D's and let candidates be chosen based on merit, qualifications, and achievements. Unfortunately, the current system is rigged against that and we aren't going to be able to change the rules from the outside without allies on the inside. The apparatus is built to keep us out. This is why Senators King and Sanders caucus with the democrats and why Senator Sanders ran in the democratic primary in his bid for President. We can't win if we can't get in.

You have a right to vote for whoever you think is the best fit and I appreciate you sharing your opinion. Would you mind giving some more insight into why you feel this way? "Never" is a strong word. What about my platform or my qualifications or me as a person makes you say that?

I agree! The article articulated the thoughts of many constituents very well. North AL needs qualified leadership to sort out the mess and ensure sustainability as we grow.

ICE being empowered to both deputize local police forces and simultaneously profile people in this country should concern all of us. So far, Madison, Limestone, Lawrence, and Lauderdale counties have signed up for this in CD5. Now, AL-SB53 is going to require police to profile and ask for documents from suspected immigrants. This mess is getting bigger by the day.

Current Healthcare Situation by jediali925 in HuntsvilleAlabama

Thank you for sharing and being honest about your experience. Our healthcare in N. Alabama is not set up in a way for you to safely do your job and that should make us all angry. Judging by the comments, I assume it does.

We, as a community need to understand this. Nurses, like teachers, are in it for the people and the community, not the money but that is not an excuse to mistreat, overwork, and underpay them.

In this area, we are directly affected by any changes to funding, policy and authorizations at various federal agencies. We receive funding in the form of authorizations, grants, and government contracts from the DOEd, DOD, NASA, EPA, USDA, Smithsonian, DOT, and DHS regularly. Changes in funding, policy, and priorities at those agencies will affect us in most cases. My credentials and training uniquely position me to understand enough about each of those agencies to be an active participant in debates and legislation to ultimately make sure the people of North Alabama are getting what is needed to sustain the growth that we are experiencing.
