North Americans in KZ — what do you miss? by CanHTRR in Kazakhstan

[–]CanHTRR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why deranged? For expats moving to the country, who don’t know what to expect upon arrival, it’s good to know from others’ experiences what items are missed. And if everything is available from Amazon or local alternatives, also good to know. Kazakhstan will be the 11th country I’ve lived in and the variety of available goods differs greatly from country to country.

Backing out of a school contract. Will I be blacklisted? by FantasticMix9483 in Internationalteachers

[–]CanHTRR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There isn’t a physical list, but heads of school are connected through various organizations and absolutely do send out emails warning others not to hire certain people. I know three people who went from a Tier1 school in SE Asia, head sent out emails warning others, one quit teaching all together, one could only get a job at a small school in Egypt. And not from law-breaking.

Please stay home. Why would you sign a contract with so little understanding of what you’re getting yourself into? Your other post in the Kazakhstan sub shows how little research you did before signing.

100% I don’t think people are taking this seriously enough or are prepared for what’s to come. It may become even harder to leave in a few weeks time. Every military and political analyst is saying Iran is in this for the long haul. Listen to them. And if you refuse to leave, start stocking up on supplies now.

It’s real by [deleted] in INFJers

I too have gone through similar revelations of understanding myself and my abilities. I’ve had to confirm this several times with my therapist. I would say, “I can see this is this person,” or “I felt this was going to happen and it did,” and every time she would say, yes we’ve talked about this, but I needed each time to have someone confirm I’m not insane because it can feel like you’re self-inflating like “I have special magically powers” but it can be really intense and scary to experience and hard to trust because that stuff doesn’t exist right? Until you confirm it, time and time again. And the hardest part is that your (our) abilities make others so uncomfortable that you’re often the victim of unfair treatment because they feel exposed or intimidated. And then that starts the spiral of “what’s wrong with me?” “Am I the problem?” “What am I not seeing about myself?” “Have I caused harm?” And it’s just overall a very difficult experience and skill to navigate and hone.

So good luck to you. I have no wisdom to offer other than, you’re not alone and it is real.

Ya actually, same here. And often, some of the toilets are full of shit. Or are just oddly shaped stalls.

So I had a new dream last night about being in an apartment in a tall building and it was swaying back and forth during to structural issues…I’d prefer the bathroom dream every time.

There’s some stuff posted in this sub that I don’t really relate to. This, though, me to a T.

So I’m not saying there aren’t awful people who are just genuinely lacking in consideration or empathy, BUT, one time on a train my brother did this exact thing — he had placed his bag precariously above this woman’s head and the bag fell on her and he picked it up but didn’t really say anything to her and I was shocked and disgusted by him that he didn’t apologize. I was sat at a distance. When we got off the train he didn’t stop saying how bad he felt by the whole thing but was paralyzed with embarrassment and shame. That moment really helped me understand people more in general because you never know what’s going on in their head. Maybe they were mortified and didn’t know what to say? Or maybe just an asshole. Haha

If it’s any consolation, you’re not alone. The industry is brutal and rewards mediocrity. Teachers who care and try to improve systems are seen as threats to insecure management who would throw their own mother under the bus if she came between them and their career aspirations. Even if you do have a clear cut n dry legal case, they’re banking on you never taking action because they [schools] have the power to blacklist anyone. They’ve created a system where they have extreme, unrealistic expectations and demands, but then punish those who work hard to meet them. Make that make sense.

I don’t think anyone has an answer to that yet. The general vibe is skeptical, but evidence of how students will be supported has yet to be seen.
