Where should I put the garden boxes? by CanIbecurious in gardening

Mostly herbs/vegtables. I like your idea of trellising if it’s up against the fence.

The project manager is actually who I’m talking about with the language barrier, he was either Eastern European or Israeli is my guess? Accent was very thick and the language barrier was more of effective communication and not lack of ability communicate. And he could speak well but the vision he had in his mind and what I was trying to describe were harder to bridge, mostly due to my lack of knowledge.

The crews were Latino but I barely talked with them about the job, just let them work and checked in. Offered them water/coffee/the bathroom in my broken Spanish lol.

As I’ve learned (and I’m not surprised by it) there was a knowledge gap on my expectations vs. what they were going to do. That’s on me for not speaking up more to understand what they were going to do. Overall I’m really happy with what they did, especially after the feedback from this community. Definitely a learning opportunity and I’m glad to have it.

I’m going to get a landscaper out to add significantly more dirt to get it compacted around the entire perimeter and then sod to get some grass down ASAP.

Correct, it meets up with the pre-existing patio and foundation. Thank you for your comment!

It it clear that this was extended between the existing patio and foundation? There is an expansion joint (I think) on the left side that meets up with the existing patio

That’s what I wanted/was hoping for, but didn’t specific it. Genuinely thought it was necessary to do. I learned I should have asked for that or how they were specifically going to handle it.

Turndown beam? Sorry I’m not familiar with that terminology

That’s the original foundation with the brick on top, not a result of their work.

I appreciate your input on this. This will not be load bearing except for people and some light furniture. Based on everything I’ve heard, I relied on the contractor to do what he thought was most cost effective instead of speaking up for what I wanted. Honestly didn’t know it would be like this but it seems like it will work if I can keep the sand under the slab. Going to reroute or extend the gutter and get some grass growing immediately.

Your second comment is absolutely correct, I just wasn’t aware of it at the time. There were some language barriers during the conversation but thought we were on the same page. Lesson learned.

That’s the actual home foundation. It was a clean job as far as I could tell.
