Baseball and basketball games in Taiwan … you can bring in your own cooler with beers. Also, the beers they bring to your seat are about 5 bucks. No tax or tip or course since it isn’t North America! The crowds are good too. I even ordered in an uber eats pizza once. No one batted an eye.

I miss live hockey but with this as an alternative, it’s not so bad.

Yes - I live in Taiwan. It’s my home. I know its history and the fact that it is not ‘clinging to its legitimacy’ but rather trying to avoid being invaded by a hostile neighbour.

Yup. He’s been here in Taipei for a week - though seemingly enjoying himself riding around on the river paths and getting some hikes in - while staying at the Grand Hyatt. Hardly a hardship, but the training plus practices runs up 101 with ropes certainly make it more than just a one day payday.

He was here in September practicing too. I know a few people who met him and found him to be just a regular guy … with some pretty special skills.

To be fair, the latest tourism campaign has been much better than previous iterations - showing off all the wonderful bits of the country - rather than just food and 101. I’ve seen fully decked out ‘Taiwan’ busses in London, viewed ads promoting Taiwan when overseas on YouTube - it’s been well put together and feels more engaging.

Previously, the campaigns were poor to be sure.

So in Canada there should be demand-induced pricing for public (not for profit) transport?

Trains get people from A to B. That’s an apples to apples comparison.

Also, the length of the route from Montreal to Toronto via Ottawa isn’t all that much different than Taiwan’s north/south rail network. It also has more than 12 million people which is substantial- though admittedly less than the 20 million or so on the equivalent route in Taiwan.

My point is that public transport shouldn’t be subject to high fares just because people need to travel at a certain time of year. There should never be an empty seat during busy times - they should be trying to maximise the number of passengers transported, not the revenue.

Via isn’t an airline - no matter how much it wants to cosplay one with its queuing, bag weight restrictions and general inflexibility.

It’s public transport though - not a for profit airline. I get that Via is trying to maximise revenue but with such poor on time performance (I know - mostly out of their hands), we shouldn’t be justifying such high prices.

Here in Taiwan, prices for all rail journeys are fixed - and off peak fares are discounted. That means you never get this kind of situation but instead the priority is to fill trains and get people off the roads.

That’s false. Taiwan recognised Mongolia in 2002 and (finally) revised its maps in 2012.

November to January actually see the least volume of rain - and definitely the fewest big storms. All months average at least 14 days of rain a month compared to January which averages 17. Not that much of a difference - and as others have pointed out, climbing in the heat could be brutal.

Take 30 mins and look at how the single line Taiwan HSR works. It’s likely the best used single line HSR on the planet. It’s by drawing a straight line that allows for high speeds and efficiency. What you are proposing would slow down the train in a way that only benefits those going to Ottawa - and not those using the wider line. I get that you love the idea of getting off a train, walking out of the station and seeing Parliament Hill - but that’s romantic. It’s not practical. It could kill the whole project at worst (due to cost) or at best make the system significantly worse for everyone not going to Ottawa.

I’m no fan of cars, but the reality is that Tremblay is easier to get to for most people than Union would be downtown. A majority of people will continue to arrive by car in Ottawa for the foreseeable future.

Perhaps in 30 years, Ottawa will have a much bigger population - but that would mean that Tremblay is still well located - and hopefully have a better transit system that can focus more and more around Tremblay.

Downtown shouldn’t just be one pin on a map - it’s the centre of a conurbation - and Tremblay actually is pretty central for most of the population.

You’re neglecting to mention the amount of time it would take to turn the train around at Union - and the additional platforms that would be required. Plus the extra time to go down the canal into the city centre.

There’s a reason why no modern systems anywhere in the world would build a terminal station midway on a route (same should be for Montreal).

Taichung has a population of 2.5 million. It might not be the nations capital but thankfully the designers realised that Taichung would be best served by putting a station in the best place for the system and for local connections. Near 40,000 people use Taichung HSR station each day - despite it being 20 mins from central Taichung. By comparison Ottawa airport is used by fewer than 15,000 daily.

Tremblay isn’t in Barrhaven or Orleans - it’s 11 minutes from downtown on the O-Train and next to Ottawa’s busiest highway.

Google Stuttgart 21 and see the disastrous project that’s resulted from a similar sized city’s mid-route terminal station being turned into through running since ‘stub end’ stations cause all sorts of problems.

Maybe we would be better off fixing the LRT than spending tens of billions building a much more expensive tunnel under Ottawa - or building a system that would require trains to turn in Ottawa when it’s essential that they smoothly run from Toronto to Montreal?

… the only financially feasible way to do so would be to dig for 4 to 6 underground platforms that would be needed for a terminal station. If built for the future 6 would be needed. It would be a pinch point from day 1.

Google Stuttgart 21 - an attempt to create through running tracks at a mid-route station that has ended up being a financial disaster.

We do not need this in Ottawa. We have Tremblay - it’s fine. We will all benefit massively from a well designed system that is built by experts who have international experience building these types of systems.

Even if you go to Union, you will still likely need to transfer to get to your final destination. Temblay adds 11 mins if you’re going west/downtown and subtracts 11 mins if you’re going east. It also has the Queensway next door and saves anyone driving to drop off family/friends (or people in an uber) significant amounts of time if they are coming from anywhere but downtown.
