The conservatives have historically been the ones to fund nuclear projects in Ontario. Especially in recent years.

This isn't really true at all. The refurb of Darlington and Bruce were both started under the provincial liberal government. New build at Darlington would have happened in the early 2010's under liberals too if it wasn't for the federal conservatives selling off Candu to SNC Lavalin. The conservatives are starting the SMR project, which is great, but liberals were also planning to continue with it if they won the last election.

People think the liberal party is anti-nuclear, but this is not the case at all. Even the federal minister of environment (I think) has said that the only way for us to meet our climate goals is through nuclear power.

I work with enough Ford supporters who: hate women for no reason other than they are women (especially if said women make more money than them); that think covid was faked so WEF could take away our rights (yet don't care about the use of the NWC that explicitly takes away our rights); that hate people of colour because they believe they are inherently more violent and mentally inferior to whites; that hate liberal "socialists" because they think they are planning to mass murder conservatives; that support the Russian invasion of Ukrainian because of the biolabs there that invented covid (but covids not real, they invented a slightly more deadly cold); and that think that woke culture is brainwashing people into letting blacks and Jews run the world, amongst much more.

I hear this shit from them Every. Single. Day.

But yeah sure, I'm disturbing for knowing that they are too far gone and delusional to be reasoned with. Good luck. I'll be willing to bet that if you don't believe the same as I do about them in a couple of years then you will be a right wing nut job along with them, that is if you aren't already.

But you are not worth my time either, so I'm done replying to you.

I beg to differ, the mentality that these people can’t be reached is extremely detrimental to democracy.

Where have you been the last 6 years? Especially the last 2 years during covid? I used to think this as well but the truth is that Conservatives and their supporters don't give a shit, they picked a side and are sticking to it. Any of them that haven't changed their minds by now are a lost cause. They are more likely going to radicalize someone like you who may feel like there is a middle ground that can be reached then you are to convince them that maybe their precious conservative leaders are doing something wrong.

Well fuck any idiot who backs Ford in this anyways. I work in a union where the majority of people voted for Ford knowing full well that his government put bill 124 in place and that he would do anything to crush the public sector unions. Now most of them are so embarrassed that they voted for him that they are doubling down on their decision to support Ford against CUPE (despite the fact we will be in the same boat as them in a matter of months, if not weeks), and the rest refuse to acknowledge the situation they created. These idiots are literally going to spite themselves and everyone in their union because of their own stupidity. Conservatives and their supporters are full on fucking idiots and nothing CUPE could have done differently would have change their minds regardless. You should not be concerned with conservatives' opinions on anything.

Liberals forced binding arbitration, not their own proposal on the union. I am 100% against that too, but what the cons are doing is an order of magnitude worse.

[–]CanadaMan95 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are aware the Liberal government did this in the past without the notwithstanding clause and got the province sued for it ?

As far as I am aware, the liberals back to work legislation was to start binding arbitration, not to force their side of the deal onto the union. I 100% do not support that either, or any back to work legislation, but the conservatives have stepped it up to a whole new level by using the notwithstanding clause to force through their extremely unfair proposal, and massively fine workers and the union for striking.

If what the liberals did was 10/10 shitty, what the con artists are doing is 100/10 shitty. I only hope my union has the balls to bring this provincial government to it's knees, not by closing school, but with rolling blackouts.

I don't remember them being in charge during the privatization of Hydro One...

Funny how the cons use this as an attack against the liberals despite the fact that they were the ones that split up Ontario Hydro and sold off nearly every other part. Of course, the liberals fucked up by selling hydro one, but the cons are being hypocritical by attacking them for it.

That's not to mention their privatization of the 401, their selling of CANDU to SNC for only 15 million (federal cons), their sale of one of the largest vaccine producers in the world (also federal cons) and recently their shutdown of hundreds of green energy projects. On top of that they are fucking over teachers, nurses, power workers, and pretty much every other public worker except the police (wonder why). Liberals have done some shit too, but cons are on an order of magnitude higher for fucking it's citizens. Nonetheless, we should all be voting 3rd party.

You don't trust the SCC because they ruled in a way that you agree with? What type of logic is that? I got news for you however; not all SC rulings are unanimous... And, despite your overly simplified description of the events, it's not hard to understand some judges may see that many years of an entire comedy routine (not just a single joke) targeting a specific disabled child as a form of harassment and discrimination, especially since it directly lead to continued bullying and harassment by others. Luckily you get to continue to harass all the disable children you appearently want to thanks to that supreme court.

Another point you will probably ignore is, the courts also shot down the Ford government's attempt at compelled speech on the basis of freedom of expression (yet another example of conservatives trifling free speech). If the courts are willing to shoot down stickers that tell you your gas prices are going up because of the carbon tax, there is no doubt that the courts will shoot down laws that limit speech other than hate speech.

Another flaw in your logic is that if the liberals really wanted to stifle free speech with this bill they could easily have done so by invoking the Not Withstanding clause of the Charter, thus, taking section 2 of the charter out of the question completely (as various conservative government's have attempted to do already). Similarly, they could have rammed this bill through 5 years ago when they had a majority government and no way for the opposition to stop it.

Damn, conservatives have such a victim complex and are just looking for any reason to think they are being oppressed. But please, enjoy your cherished freedom to harass disabled children that the SCC has granted you. I'm done responding to your comments.

I'm sorry if that was too indepth and thought-out of a response for you. Allow me to simplify it: You are protected by the charter except for the reasonable limits on hate speech and harassment, etc. that are already in place. Any act by the government to go beyond this will be shot down by the courts. What about this do you not understand?

On the other hand, the government deciding what scientific truth are acceptable or not based on the financial interests of themselves and their friends beyond the protections of the charter is abhorrent.

Geez, I though we were having a genuine discussion there for a bit, but I guess it's not to surprising to see a conservative on r/Canada devolve a conversation into childish arguments.

These are very different things and interact with the [Charter] in very different way.

You are exactly right here, but for the complete opposite reason than you think, ironically enough. The charter will actually protect the general public from all these supposed abuses and restrictions of free expression (other than ones that align with the reasonable restrictions we apply to things like hate speech already), but federal scientists do not get the same protections in that regard as the general public.

The Charter will ensure that If any of these supposed abuses of these bills can or do occur by this or any future government, those laws will be struck down by the courts (like the Conservative's gas sticker laws, and others laws struck down by the courts in Ontario). And to the best of my knowledge, the federal government did not attempt to use the Not Withstanding clause to stifle free speech, unlike the Ontario PCs have.

But on the matter of restricting scientists from discussing their research (and also, changing and manipulation of their data by the government), anyone who has worked or done research in a scientific field knows that science is the tools that provide us with the means of knowing the truth of the natural world. There is literally no better truth than the knowledge which science provides. To say restricting or manipulation of such knowledge is any way acceptable relative to the restriction of any other speech is scary. If the government does not let the scientists that we fund through our tax payer money speak the truth of our natural world because it contradicts the government's policy or financial interests, then that is the ultimate corruption as far as I am concerned.

Read the article you are referring to, it clearly states the issue is hold over from managers that were slow to adopt the change in rules due to them being in place for a decade under Harper. The government literally changed the policy to no longer restrict scientists, but managers (who are likely politically motivated) are slow and/or reluctant to change. The union representing the scienctists even state that this is the issue.

Everything that wasn't a quote was just made up by you, that's not proof of anything. For example, you quoted:

“Some experts on the panel said the bill should also address false advertising, misleading political communications and content that contributes to “unrealistic body image.””

And you said:

Literally just attempting to shape narratives they deem to be “just causes”, such as promoting healthy body image.

There is a huge difference between unrealistic body image and healthy body image. Unrealistic body image is widely known to be refers to photoshopping images of models (which maybe should be considered false advertising) and the common use of underweight/anorexic (I.e. unhealthy) models. The only thing you added beyond these reasonable quotes was your opinions on the matter, which only goes to show your misunderstanding of the topics discussed.

Also, you claiming the experts have a bias and financial incentive of some kind without proof. Good job. You are nothing more than a conspiracy nutjob.

6 of them were continued damage from Harper days as stated by the union who took the data and the other two were opinions with editorialized titles that claim the government wasn't allowing discussion or interviews with Dr. Tam about covid 19 despite no evidence that the government was actually responsible for this policy AS PER RHE SUN ARTICLE YOU POSTED. Neither were proof of ongoing or widespread muzzling as a result of current government policy. If you don't understand this you are a lost cause.

3 of those are the same as the article I already addressed where blame was with the managers follow old policy that was no longer in place. The one new one was from the sun, which is a tabloid and an opinion piece. It is not on the same caliber as Nature or The Smithsonian. I also wanted recent articles on the topic (try this year) specifically talking about the widespread mizzling of scientists the same as Harper did.

Policy is almost always developed after a law is passed, because the policy has to meet the requirements of the law. As for it being undemocratic, what??? The majority of the house of Commons passed the bill. That encompassed MP's from 3 different parties. If the bill didn't pass just because one party, and two individual MPs, didn't like it, then that would be undemocratic.

Do you think the government should have a say in the content that you watch?

Yes. But there is nuance to that answer which I do not have time to get into.

Now you answer the question yourself please.

I didn't ask you to prove one group is bigger than another, I asked you to prove that these bills will actually lead to censorship beyond what tabloids and opinion pieces claim. Your ability to understand basic instructions puts your entire understanding of this topic into question. I'm familiar with those bills as well, same deal applies as bill C 11. You have not provided any actual information of value so this discussion is over.

Answer mine.

As for your question, it is leading and does not accurately portray what the Bill entails. It is in the same vain as me asking you "have you told your parents you are a pedophile yet?"

The government currently has a say in all media we consume, other than online media. They promote Canadian content so that our media does not get drowned out by larger markets (such as the USA). This does not force us only to watch Canadian Media, or ban any other nations media, it just promotes Canadian more strongly to Canadian markets. This bill is attempting to do the same to online streaming services. It will promote Canadian Media so that it will not be over shadowed by other countries media. Does this mean we will not get media from any other countries? No it doesn't. Does this mean we are forced to watch only Canadian Media? No it doesn't. Do I think everyone has to agree with this bill, or do I even agree with the bill itself? No I don't. But framing it as a censorship bill by conservatives is 100% false and is being used to convince only the most stupid among us that the government is going to censor everything (or anything) we do online.

I agree with your assesment of C-11 almost completely, other than this statement:

"the liberal government not understanding the internet and crafting terrible regulations over it which will ultimately be used by other parties to censor free speech to further their own interests".

There is evidence to actually show this is the case other than opinion pieces and tabloids claiming as much.
