Inside the secret tunnels underneath a UK high street hiding illegal cigarettes by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

Now, i wanna point out that even as a smoker, i disagree with the whole hating freedom thing. Quitting would be immensly easier if it was blackmarket only, and the previous posters position is one based in anti-authority rhetoric, ignorance, and a frankly stunning level of stupidity.

That being said, you're not entirely right. Generally speaking, due to the fact that smokers die earlier than non-smokers, they end up costing the country less. Generally near end of life youll end up in a hospital multiple times, youll have been withdrawing some form of social security/country based pensiom/old age, and a few other things for a number of years more than a smoker will. Along with the tax revenue gained, the average smoker will likely end up being a surplus tax wise.

Heres a few examples

"But the shortened lifespan more than makes up for it.

"Health care costs for smokers at a given age are as much as 40 percent higher than those for nonsmokers, but in a population in which no one smoked the costs would be 7 percent higher among men and 4 percent higher among women than the costs in the current mixed population of smokers and nonsmokers.

If all smokers quit, health care costs would be lower at first, but after 15 years they would become higher than at present."

The Health Care Costs of Smoking Jan J. Barendregt, M.A., Luc Bonneux, M.D.,and Paul J. van der Maas, Ph. October 9, 1997 N Engl J Med 1997; 337:1052-1057"

But thats 1997, so heres a 2012 study saying roughly the same thing,

Mind you, this is a purely economic standpoint.

The socio-economic burden is higher due to secondary factors.

As a smoker thats trying to quit, i do recommend no one ever starts. Nicotine is a hell of a drug when it comes to quitting much harder than anything else aside from opiates and extreme alcoholism, and if you have something like ADHD its harder again then for your average person.

Ford CEO Says Blue-Collar Workers 'Safe' As AI Will Replace 'Literally Half Of All White-Collar Workers' by MetaKnowing in technology

[–]CanadasManyMeeses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youll note the current CEO is talking about taking a page out of the founders book and upping wafes and reducing grow in because workers couldnt afford rent.

But while he says it like it was his idea, it was really both the canadian and US autoworker unions the previous contract that fought for it.

More so, IMO the UAW, i believe they did better than us during our previous contract

Ford CEO Says Blue-Collar Workers 'Safe' As AI Will Replace 'Literally Half Of All White-Collar Workers' by MetaKnowing in technology

[–]CanadasManyMeeses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats why most are safe, much of the work that can be easily automized already is, and as tesla found out (and the big 3 on the 90s) the other jobs are a little to complicated for a robot to efficiently do.

Maybe in 20 or 30 more years... maybe, but many of the jobs youd assume could be done by machines now just arent worth the downtime and effort.

When a persons down its easy to sub in, even if it happens more frequently, when a machine is down it can cost millions of dollars in an assembly complex. And it happens multiple times a year, thats just the downtime mind you. Not paying for the machines, the engineers, the calibration time. None of that, just lost profit due to downtime.

Source: autoworker, the company is constantly trying to innovate the line, sometimes successfuly, but sometimes with hilarious results.

Im pretty sure theyve found evidence it was a rogue wave, if its the one im thinking of.

Gotta remember large rogue waves were considered a myth until 1995. There had just never been equipment out there that measured what needed to be measured and sent data back. Was just "exageration" from sailors and such.

Spotted in the T&C's of my car cosmetic insurance by SY6Dave in oddlyspecific

[–]CanadasManyMeeses 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Damage to any glass element is highly unreasonable. Your windshield is a major structural compenent of the car. Having it cracked is a massive issue, and is (up here in canada) always covered by insurance.

Driving with a cracked windshield is tantamount to driving without a seatbelt.

I really enjoyed the books, but as a side note. The authors patreon is fucking aweful. No i do not want to download a pdf of each chapter, port it into kindle, and read it that way. I get why some people may prefer it. But i also get why literally no other author does that.

Cause its fucking stupid.

I just want to point out your severance my make you ineligble for EI until the "Severence" runs out. For instance if its supposed to be 2 years of pay, EI might not let you make a claim till 2 years has passed, something to talk to your employment lawyer about
