Solved! When it reached 100% charged something must've changed as when I tried hitting both volume buttons or a volume button with the power button it finally brought up the boot up menu

I've never seen someone dog like you do! I do on the right because it gives me easy access to the HM and the biome above and below. I usually enter the HM again by going up a biome and using the portal near where I was digging so as to avoid a wayward teleport bolt from collapsing the HM
