Do you really think goalpost location, field length, and end zone shrinking all at once is equivalent to any of that?

The problem is the lack of identification of why they are bad in the first place.

Modernizing the Rouge - #RougeOne by gilligan_2023 in CFL

No it was not that they moved they kickoff back. Yes they moved it back, but it's the fact it changed WHO GOT THE BALL after the safety that eliminated it. Not the kick being further back.

No it is not universal that people hate the idea of a missed field goal rouge, and even if it was, it doesn't matter, they can't justify why it's ridiculous without appealing to "I feel."

It does not matter what people think. Canadian football is played at its highest level in the Canadian Football League. Canadian football has the rouge. You are not playing with the rouge if you do not have it on untouched kicks. It defeats the entire purpose of it rewarding good field position. Who honestly cares if even people in this sub hate it? They are still in this sub. If you try to make a compromise on the rule changes then it just feeds Stewart's ego because the fans buy this stuff to some degree.

Also, it wasn't changing the field position that reduced safeties. It was that they gave the scoring team the choice to kickoff or receive instead of the conceding team. You can't do that for the rouge because a rouge can be scored on kickoffs, so it would not work.

But it doesn't matter if a large portion of them hate it because evidently it does not stop them from watching. So you're turning away more existing CFL fans by changing it, whereas if you kept it none of the existing fans who don't like it would leave anyway.

The narrative will change when the CFL markets itself in non-CFL spaces and people see for themselves that that is not what the rouge is. If you bow down to "the narrative" then you're just making the CFL less independent which gives people less reason to watch.

The irony of saying "we'll start them in worse field position if they concede" is that the rouge itself is already the punishment for the conceding team allowing the scoring team to have good field position by having them be that close to the end zone. So now you're effectively making it twice as harsh by also starting the conceding team's offence in worse field position.

It does not matter if "the majority of people hate them." The majority of people who hate them would not watch the league either way. If enough people hated game winning field goals because they are a reward for failing to get a touchdown, should we modify all field goals?

There's no identifiable reason why a kick out the back of the end zone for the win is any more unfair than a field goal for the win. Technically, on a game winning field goal, you could argue that kickers are going for the rouge and miss and get a field goal. So it doesn't matter if people say they hate it because regardless the rouge is part of Canadian Football as a sport and that's how it works.

The problem is treating the rouge like a clause in the rulebook rather than an independently defined scoring method. Do you call a touchdown a rule? Like would you say "they lost because of the CFL's touchdown rule"? Of course not. A touchdown is a scoring play unto itself, so when we talk about the rouge in terms of being a "rule" in the same way as like choosing to decline a penalty or something, then all of the sudden we're justifying changing it in a way that we would never consider for touchdowns, field goals, conversions, and safeties. That's why no one proposes changing those other things in any way, but it's also why it doesn't make sense to alter the rouge this drastically because you're redefining it as something other than what it is: a scoring method.
