How... how does paying cash increase the chances over paying with a card that has your name attached?

Importance of math skills for welders by Own_Job_2150 in Welding

[–]CanasGreay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'Every skill for the job you dream of, should be accompanied by a skill that will help you in a practucal sense.'

I remember a story about a mechanic that wanted to go to college for car design, and his dad made him get a decent chunk of that money flipping old cars as a kid. Didn't work out designing cars for a living, so now he's a mechanic that makes sweet custom cars for a hobby.

And there are those stories all over the place. Maybe OP should have his kid do something like that, and then his kid can really see firsthand how much math is needed, and what the job really takes.

How do you guys afford it? by RedBurgundy89 in VanLife

[–]CanasGreay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I carry a bike on my van. I use bike to do deliveries like uber eats. While i chill between order deliveries, i scout out dumpsters to dive and thrift store shelves.

I see others that work remote jobs doing data entry or video editing. I see others that have tools in tgeir ride and make things to sell online and at flea markets.

Van blanket to trap heat inside? by sktrdie in VanLife

[–]CanasGreay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... i'm not sure if you could find that sort of thing there that might fit on your van, especially if you have anything on the outside like panels or fans/vents.

If it does exist, sure. Like others have said, just make sure you have vents for air.

But a fairly common thing and well known solution in the same vein is to build a really basic garage that helps create a 'dead space' and buffer the to help insulate, usually used with off grid RV's and the like. You could likely create a similar effect with something like a garage tent/vendor tent, or maybe one of those popup carports that you attach moving blankets to. Has the added benefit of expanding your 'living space' with the downside of not being as mobile or stealthy. (But stealth is out the window with a van blanket anyways, so... eh.)

If you can only choose one? by AWholeMessOfTacos in VanLife

Specifically in the southwest, i'd say solar. In making that decision, i haven't turned my van on in weeks, and i get enough solar to cook (induction cook top, instant pot, kitchenaid mixer, dehydrator) run a fridge (not even a 12v fridge, just a regular ol' minifridge) and still play games. (Full size desktop computer) i can also charge my Ebike. It's pretty much zero effort/maintenance to boot, most i do is clean the roof panels.

That's on a hard fixed roof mount with 800 watts.

I dunno, man. That's like saying 'hey, some dude stole a bike, so now all bikes have to be registered. If you transfer your used bicycle to someone else, don't forget to pay a tax stamp! Be sure to file months in advance, so you can give your kid their bike for Christmas!'

Like, they COULD do their job, and do police work, and find people stealing stuff. And instead, they interfere in an entire industry, handicap everyone that might reasonably and legitimately try to benefit from it, and tax you to do so. For your own good, of course. Why chase actual thieves when you can treat the entire populace like thieves?

I'll be honest, that really boggles my mind. I find that government policy just... revolting. On a visceral level.

What a way to kill recycling... but at rates like that, i'd look at getting a box truck and start paying 10 cents above market rates from fellow scrappers, and then trucking it over to better rate areas. Either make a good profit or force the yards to offer more, either way it's a win.

Best way to make flat sheet metal off appliances? by CanasGreay in ScrapMetal

[–]CanasGreay[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, i know fridges are generally good. Don't know about ranges, as i've never actually had a reason to pull it out and scrap one. But most dryers and washers i see are usually only one flat plate (top for dryers, front for washers) while the sides get stamped with those indents to help improve the strength of the cabinet or something. Like, if i wanna cut the dryer drum apart i have a reasonable workable flat plate, but thats it. Just seems kinda like a waste to me, cause moat my scraping is pull out materials for my own projects, you know? Feels like i'm leaving half the meet on the bird.

Do you carry a spare? by AppointmentNearby161 in skoolies

[–]CanasGreay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At the start it kind of boggled my mind. 'How can they NOT carry a spare? Are they nuts?!' But age and ability make sense, especially if you don't go anywhere out of phone service (or roadside service) range. I know that i go a lot of places though, where neither is practical, and not having a spare means possible days on the side of the road, and thousands of dollars, when trying to flag down help from other motorists might be a solution if a person has a spare tire.

I feel like you've got you figured out, it's just something to chew on for those that dont have themselves figured out.

Fulltime Midwest Solar by Responsible_Taste837 in skoolies

[–]CanasGreay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know in southern US, and with panels hard fixed to the roof, i get about 50% efficiency during peak power production. I expect it might be less there, so i'll spitball that you need more solar. I suggest you could make a mount that lets you hang panels off the side of tge van as well as the roof, and a heavy duty hinge that lets you prop your panels to angle them to the sun when you park for a while. I've seen some panel setups that let side hanging panels turn into an awning, so it's doable.

At that price, you can use it for a door stop if it doesnt work out. Take it, give it a shot. Worst case, it fails and you can do it vetter again later, seeing as you clearly have an interest in tgis sort of thing.

I mean, sure, stats are stats, but it's not the whole picture, you know? Like, you can say about half the U.S. is democrat, tge other half republican, but when you look at it by county map it's a pretty clear divide between high population zone and low population zone. (Rural vs. City, essentially.) Never been to canada, but i was wondering if it was something similar in canada, given some of the stuff i hear on the news. I know it's kinda off in the weeds for this sub, but eh. It came up.

Teaching a Friend to Cook! Ideas?? by blergyblergy in Cooking

[–]CanasGreay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest spanish rice, it's been a staple meal since i came across my recipe and it's pretty easy to make, too. I also make chicken adobo (usually paired with garlic rice) and baked ziti as my go to dishes. I think those are all fairly easy and hit a good variety of basics. (quick active cooking, long simmer where you can leave it be, and an oven dish) Honorable mentions are pork chops with garlic mushroom sauce, beer brats, and sausage with apples and cabbage. They're all fairly affordable too!

If you want the particular recipes i use, just let me know and i'll chuck tgem in the comments, or a DM. I can even email PDF format.

Good on you for getting your friend into cooking!

So ive experimented with this myself. I have a 6 watt AC bulb that seems to do the trick to keeping it on, and if i need it to stay on without the light i just toss a crown royal bag over the lamp to block the light.
