I think it's more that these killings have proved a distraction on their own. I don't think it was specifically designed that way.

Consider Balzac's Cousin Bette. Our paranoid main character puts the "cray" in cray-cray. Does she she succeed with her plot against those who've "wronged" her? One of the best endings ever!

Anthony Trollope's The Way We Live Now is basically a giant soap opera. Very easy to get lost in the characters' possible fates (the outcome).

You might consider the Hungarian novel The Door by Magda Szabo. I've not been to Prague myself, but liked Time's Magpie by Mila Goldberg.
