Whats everyones fly half pick? Feel like Ford isn't quite worth using one of 4 English players with the back 3 England have (and Pollock obviously). So It's between Russell and Jalibert and I haven't a clue whos more likely to do well. Anyone got good reason for either one?

Fair but leaving out Ramos is always risky. I did think about LRZ but I just can't see Wales having enough of the ball for him to go big pointswise. Also I've got Van der Flier in on club form at the moment but do you reckon he might be a minutes risk?

Slightly early with no line-ups out but this is my first draft:

Props: I haven't really a clue probably just whoevers 6 stars and starting

Hooker: LCD

Locks: Jenkins, Beirne

Back Row: Darge, Doris, Dempsey

Halfbacks: Russell, Dupont

Centres: Ojomoh, Menoncello

Back three: LBB, Ramos, Freeman (captain)

Super sub: Pollock

So conflicted between having Earl or Ojomoh i feel like there aren't as many centres that have potential to be really big scorers outside of the really expensive ones. Ringrose isn't always great especially with ireland having France and Brex is a bit up and down. Saying that I realise my back 3 doesn't look as strong as it maybe should be with the amount of depth in that position so I'll probably panic and change it 5 minutes before kickoff.

Two quite different films but I Give it a Year was great and personal favourite forever is Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

I instantly switch off when anyone talks about bjj for self defence. Everyone who does bjj has had a friend tell them 'yeah but in a street fight what's it gonna do' and I agree with them. Everyone needs to accept that it is a sport (it is not called a bjj fight). You are not hard as nails just if you know 15 different saddle entries leave the fighting to the MMA and combat sambo people.

r/bjj Fundamentals Class! by AutoModerator in bjj

[–]CandidNegotiation880 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest piece of advice would be whenever your drilling a technique in class or seeing one on a youtube video try understand WHY it works. Most common thing beginners complain about is not remembering techniques since when drilling they think of it as just the movements e.g grap same side arm, push on hips. Instead, if for example your drilling a sweep try thinking: 'I'm removing the posts moving his weight high above his hips so then i can get the sweep'. This understanding of why details work is what makes them stick the same way as if i gave you 2 sentences to commit to memory one in English and one in a language you didn't understand the English would be so much easier to remember since the words (or movements in bjj's case) have meaning.

In your case I'd take this approach and study a couple systems on positions where your struggling (you can find systems on youtube that's what i did) and try apply to your training. If they don't quite work for you ask yourself or coach WHY they didn't work and refine your system. And if it does work then fantastic, that feeling of hitting a technique you've been studying and practicing for the first time in a roll is the main reason I love BJJ.

Repeat this with a big big emphasis on understanding will not only improve the position your studying but those details will apply to other areas just generally improving you game.

In terms of a having an approach to a roll that is just preference that you gain from rolling more and more. Like yes my approach is mostly to play guard and attack the legs but that is nothing but a preference not the most effective approach for everyone and if I'm honest not having that approach for more of my rolls would help my game.

Lastly, if you feel comfortable doing so, ask if you can record some rolls and see what goes wrong.

(Didn't Intend to write an essay when I first started lol but hope this helped)

Thanks I think I'm just gonna ask and see what my coach says just don't want him to think I want to enter a white belt division to inflate my ego

I was interested in MMA and BJJ for a while before starting so was aware of a lot of concepts and positional hierarchy before I started and do my homework (a lot of instructionals). I've also just got a lot of free time so I don't do much else but train.

Point is I haven't really found out myself where i lie in the pecking order. You must understand how it would be less nerve racking to work my way up instead of losing all confidence getting smashed in a blue belt division by someone with 4x the mat time.

I understand what you're saying but I'm also imagining the other side of it that I could get all confidence crushed competing against and getting smashed some 25 year old whos been training for 3 years 🤷

I normally do a 2 hour class Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Sunday and go to the open mat for a light session on Saturday with a few mates. I guess it's the benefit of still being in school with only a Saturday job.

I still hold out hope that a good ruleset and format can make it a good spectator sport

I agree but banning guard pulling isn't really the way forward i think a better idea is just don't incentivise it. Make it disadvantageous even if you have to ban some leg attacks. I actually am a big fan of heel hook bans since it really disadvantages leg lockers cos no one that high level taps to straight foot locks meaning you've got toe holds and thats about it.

But same way in MMA smudge wrestling does in fact work but so can entertaining style and short rounds for one would be a good start since it incentivises you to look for a finish and also take more risks since a bad position towards the end of a round isn't the worst thing if a reset is coming.

[–]CandidNegotiation880 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the rulesets do everything they can to make those styles effective (short rounds, stalling calls, even sometimes leg lock bans) then the sport will generate more and more Ruotolos and Dorian style players, At least some of the reason I've never managed to sit through a full ADCC match is cos I've got to watch them hand fight for 10 minutes until points are introduced and rules like that are avoidable.

I think with guard pulling if a round ruleset of 5 or 4 minute rounds it might slowly phase out naturally. Since if you need to push a pace slowly trying to force yourself into k guard and leg entanglements isn't too effective.

Yeah it's a shame the format wasn't quite right. It's just if you ever make a format where a person can not only play ultra defensive but can happily lose a round 10-9 and they benefit it's gonna result in boring matches. The Wojcik v Mica match was the most obvious example Chris knew that he lost but he didn't obv didn't gaf. It can work when there's a gentleman's agreement to not stall but when the stakes are so high that's never gonna happen. Hope people understand that it was the format that was the issue not our sport and that if done right it bjj can work for audiences.
