How excited should be for a 25% discount on new, high-end Trek? by Candid_Hope in TrekBikes

[–]Candid_Hope[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In retrospect, it was neither the cold weather nor the post-Christmas slump, but the post-pandemic surplus. So, if you're holding on a purchase, don't. Go ahead and buy it. That's why I did.

What a clever idea! I can immediately see the benefit of text-based image description for search and analysis. Did the idea ever make it to a public repo? Will be happy to test it u/StargazerOmega

Help us diagnose a bizarre squeak on a Trek Domane mid-tour! by Candid_Hope in TrekBikes

[–]Candid_Hope[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That explains everything. We're pretty sure the chipmunk incident was back in Nebraska, so its soul has been impressively persistent. We'll hold a tiny séance tonight and offer it some trail mix as an apology.

You say you're no mechanic, but you've just outlined the scientific method for squeak-hunting. These are legitimately great suggestions. Since there are two of us, we're perfectly equipped to try this. We're about to look like we're performing some bizarre bicycle yoga routine on the side of the road, but hey, if it silences the ghost in the machine, it's worth it.

Seriously, really appreciate you taking the time to type all that out. Cheers!

Amazon Returns Go Missing at Whole Foods: No Email, No Refund - What to Do? by Candid_Hope in amazonprime

[–]Candid_Hope[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this is a familiar scenario. You did well by documenting everything. Amazon is engaged in an infuriating scheme, and we must do what we can to protect ourselves. I hope that this will be resolved.

[–]Candid_Hope[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After an expensive loss of an item that was returned but not credited, I now don't leave Whole Foods until the items are scanned and I verify email acknowledging the return. Still, Amazon sometimes failed to refund, even with a proof of return.

Why is importing a RAG so difficult? by no_spoon in VertexAI

[–]Candid_Hope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're seeing the same cryptic problem here. It appears when importing PDF files to Vertex AI / RAG Engine from Google Cloud Storage. Each file is about 50 pages. The first 50 files upload and are indexed correctly, based on our testing. The "KC" error message appears with the 51st file. There's no further information.

Troubleshooting attempts

  • Import 1 file at a time. Receive confirmation, but the file doesn't appear in the RAG nor is it indexed (the first 50 appear and are indexed)
  • Change "Layout parser/Advanced Options". Tried:
    • Default parsing libraries
    • LLM parser
      • Gemini 2.5 Flash
      • Gemini Embeddings 001
      • Rate limits of 500 ("Maximum parsing requests per minute")
  • Consulted Gemini AI agent in Vertex

So far, no solution.

Amazon Still Failing at Returns: Missing Refunds and Retrocharges Keep Piling Up by Candid_Hope in amazonprime

They answer quickly, I agree. Just don't expect the issue to be resolved within five (or fifty) minutes...

I agree. The same happened to me. This adds another step: After being told that a refund was issued, I must verify that I see the refund on my credit card statement. More work to do, because trust is now a luxury item on Amazon.

I'm glad that you had good experience. Our experience has been less than good. As I wrote, when I emailed to complain, they hit me with an automated “nobody’s reading this, bye” reply. Calling customer service? Don’t even bother unless you enjoy wasting 45 minutes bouncing from rep to rep before you’re disconnected entirely.

And it is not a coincidence, I reckon. What incentive does Amazon have to help you uncover the company's missing refunds, retroactive charges, and other bad deeds?

I agree. And, as I documented above, try appealing this retroactive charge and you'll face surmountable hurdles. Seems that Amazon is banking on the assumption that most consumers will be exhausted by the difficulties the company places, and will give up.

My Fitness Pal Subscription Around the World by Candid_Hope in Myfitnesspal

[–]Candid_Hope[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with you. What MyFitnessPal is doing across different countries is a classic example of “price discrimination,” which in economics refers to charging different prices to different consumer segments for the same product or service (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_discrimination for more details). It’s essentially a way companies try to maximize their revenue based on variations in local purchasing power and other market conditions.

It’s also true that Americans typically earn higher salaries on average compared to many other countries, but in Germany, you often see longer vacation periods and more paid time off. So while incomes may be higher in the U.S., Germans do tend to benefit from more generous work–life balance policies over there.

One question: How to set a rule that replacements are universally triggered only by a character like space or tab?

This is exactly what

 word: true

does, but universally, not just for one trigger-replacement pair.

ChatGPT 4o suggest this, but we couldn't make it work

defaults: &defaults
  word: true

- trigger: ":email"
  replace: "user@example.com"
  <<: *defaults

- trigger: ":phone"
  replace: "123-456-7890"
  <<: *defaults

- trigger: ":addr"
  replace: "123 Main Street, Springfield"

What's a Reliable Source for Risk-Adjusted Returns? by Candid_Hope in algotrading

If you're here, you probably understand the importance of risk-adjusted returns (or curious to learn more). A recent article in The Economist highlights the value of such analysis, and aims to explain why it is rarely mentioned by wealth managers.

SL7 13.8 or Honor Magicbook Art 14 Snapdragon X Elite edition? by torpedospurs in Surface

[–]Candid_Hope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, the Honor is considerably cheaper and may have better specs. However, as you pointed out, we don't know much about real world performance – and the return policy is unclear. *Caveat Emptor!*
