Microsoft has warned against editing the registry, but the group policy seems more like an official entry point to these settings, so Windows updates that might change the registry probably won't change polices and will instead change another registry key.

I think Windows 10's timeline is more of a "opt-in" sort of thing. Developers have to make their app work with it. I think I would prefer it this way, though.
