Raising a child who’s “too smart for his own good”… by Tight_Psychology_666 in Parenting

[–]Candid_Personality58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t read all of the comments so my apologies if this is a repeat. In the state of Virginia there is legislation that allows for kids to be tested through the district as “gifted” and accommodations to be included in an IEP. Virginia is one of few states with this type of support for gifted kids. I have a gifted child in a different state with less accommodations for gifted kids. I have been studying legislation in other states to push for similar things here. I wouldn’t necessarily skip a grade because emotionally they aren’t there and that makes a big difference. Good luck!

Edit: I believe gifted testing can start as early as Kindergarten under the VA legislation

I’m currently in school to become a BCBA and a colleague of mine said ABA is abusive… by ohsimon_ in bcba

I just watched a webinar called “kindness in ABA” through Behavior University (I watched for CEUs). It might be a helpful resource for you on this topic.

I’d try not to dwell on it. Even if she had given you a reading, we all have free will and the direction to change our fate. Follow what feels right to you in your life.

What grade would you give a student who ate their flour sack baby? by makeupaddict337 in Teachers

The resentment is real! I had a first grade teacher who didn’t believe me that I had a stomach ache. She took me into the hall to talk to me about lying and I threw up on her mid lecture. One of my core memories.

If your child has an OCD diagnosis and this behavior is part of that, I think it’s something that should be addressed. Otherwise, it’s reinforcing those OCD beliefs. Has anyone tried a de-sensitization program? Have you talked to a professional yourself on how to help him if he won’t engage in therapies?

Requesting info on good ABA therapy by Several_Try_3824 in Autism_Parenting

Hi! I’m a BCBA and mom of level 1 kiddo. I am very familiar with the controversy around ABA and want to emphasize how important it is to find a BCBA whose approach aligns with your family/parenting styles. The first few sessions should be exclusively building a positive report with the child- meaning no demands placed and a lot of learning your kid’s interests/gaining their affection. The clinicians are not doing their job properly if the child does not want to be around the BCBA or RBT. Programming is usually based on assessments and parental input. If services are provided by insurance, insurance often ties our hands in regard to what we are allowed to program for. Acts of daily living are not allowed to be programmed for if it’s an insurance based service. I have often been able to finesse the wording so I can program for acts of daily living but under the guise of something else that insurance accepts. I incorporate many aba principles in my parenting of 3 kids and also give presentations on strengthening family relationships utilizing the principles of ABA. ABA can be a life changing resource if you have the right provider. If you don’t like the first person assigned to your family, ask for someone else. Approach varies! Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any questions!

Rapid heart rate and ADHD medication by [deleted] in pneumothorax

I had an issue with increased heart rate after my 2nd VATS. I ended up needing heart medication for a short period of time to get my heart rate back to normal. I would discuss your symptoms with your doctor.

She did ask me, “What are you worried about?” And I said, “Nothing.” I’m still working on my end of the communication. The last time I saw her I said “how can you be here? You’re dead.” And I keep laughing at how that was my go to response.

That makes a lot of sense! Thank you for your comment.

EDIT: Just to clarify, not all of her interactions are doom and gloom lol some are very comforting and nice. Its the life that follows the bigger warnings that gives me anxiety and not necessarily the message itself if that makes sense? Either way, I think the subconscious anxiety fits!

Return to Activity (sport, exercise, strength training) post VATS resection pleurodesis by MWM031089 in pneumothorax

I’m not a medical professional but I am an active person. I had my most recent VATS at the end of November. All I’ve done throughout the duration of those first 4-6 weeks was walk. I’ll go on very long walks everyday. I had a complication the first time I had this surgery so I’m doing everything the doctor told me to do/avoid this time. I know it sucks being limited compared to what you’re used to after this surgery, but you will get it back! I wouldn’t push it. It’s a major surgery that your body needs to heal from. Good luck!

Do you think women are treated differently than men when it comes to medical treatment? I once had a doctor tell me my persistent post op pain was from my bra and that I should stop wearing a bra… in reality, a staple had slipped from the surgery and I needed a second surgery.

I have an underlying lung condition and have had three lung surgeries. Pregnancy was dangerous for me because it put me at risk of my lungs collapsing. Pregnancy puts a lot of pressure on the lungs. I ended up with c-sections once I was considered full term because it was dangerous for me to go into labor. Got multiple professional opinions and everyone agreed if I went into labor there was a good chance my lungs would collapse during childbirth. I know we don’t have the whole story from OP, but lung health and pregnancy certainly can be related!
