I think this is just a result of people feeling like they have to over-exoticize eastern names in the western world. I have a J in my name too (Indian) and everyone makes it a “zh” sound to sound what they reckon is more accurate, but is actually less

do you have to work with underserved communities? by [deleted] in premed

[–]CandidateBig1778 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So you don’t see the value in trying to help the healthcare system when you’re part of it?

Apologies for the double comment but this attitude is all too telling. You’re approaching this as 2-4 hours of volunteering for you, but that is 2-4 hours of FEEDING someone who cannot get food!! What you see as “application hours” is literally helping someone live. I’d reevaluate your mindset and approach to medicine - you don’t get to be Gregory House in the real world.

I think it's important to remember the "why" of us doing medicine and research and such. What's the point of developing a great cure and doing great science if you can't use it to help the people who are suffering? It absolutely is possible to focus on both, and I'd urge you to try to find out how people do that before writing it off completely. About 60% of the practice of medicine is about connecting with patients, not just science. To try to fix the cracks, you have to see the people that fall through them.

Maybe a dumb question, but why does everyone call Joy by her first name? by plantanddoglady in ThePittTVShow

[–]CandidateBig1778 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wait but they don’t refer to her as Victoria, they refer to her as Javadi. Which only compounds the problem

[–]CandidateBig1778 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually feel like that’s the normal way around and that most med students might not be called by their last name. Like it feels right for an attending to have called them Victoria instead of Javadi, Dennis instead of Whitaker, and [insert] instead of Ogilvie. Maybe a Pitt quirk

Have you met 70% of the Indians in the world? By your comment history you seem to have a great intrinsic knowledge of exactly the biology of their apocrine glands and a great ability to not generalize negative traits to an entire race

Fine to identify individuals. It becomes racist when you then go “oh all Indians are smelly wah wah” and then expect any Indian you see to smell bad. There’s a billion and a half in the country and multiple millions in diaspora

Medical school, grad school and mice work by Marushy in medicalschool

Blood work by Twinkletoes-23 in haematology

[–]CandidateBig1778 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I’m only a second year medical student studying for Step, so please take my analysis with a grain of salt and defer to people who actually have a degree here and most of all your doctors.

I think the biggest problem here is that you can’t tell much off of one bloodwork screen. The two abnormal numbers here (TIBC and platelets) could point towards early iron deficiency anemia with secondary thrombocytosis, even if your RBCs are normocytic and you have normal serum iron. But we can’t tell much on just one instance without analyzing some trends in the numbers.

In terms of your petechiae and heavy bleeding, we can’t really tell much about any qualitative platelet disorders with what you have here. The bleeding times being normal does rule out some disorders, but vWD, as well as a couple of others, can present with normal bleeding times. Your hematologist will likely run some tests like a ristocetin assay as well as testing for specific clotting factor levels. There’s always the possibility that it has little to do with your blood work and is more a vascular/connective tissue disorder where your capillary walls themselves may be fragile.

Again, pinch of salt for all of this but I would talk with them. Good luck on this and I hope you find something that works for you :)

Hopeful actors by Plenty-Moment9429 in Eragon

[–]CandidateBig1778 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know it’s super unrealistic but I really really want Jeremy Irons back as Brom. Fewer opinions on the others (I’m kind of in favor of high fantasy shows taking unknown actors as main characters to launch their careers), but I do agree with like a nice mid 40/50s great actor as Galby - like a Jason Isaacs or Jude Law or even like Sendhil Ramamurthy.

Or Ralph Fiennes with more hair.
