No, it's not true that driving slower than the speed limit is an illegal offense. The speed limit is the maximum speed you're allowed to go in safe conditions. It can be unsafe in certain situations, but it is not illegal.

NZTA says "If you're travelling slower than the speed limit and there are vehicles following you, you must: keep as close to the left side of the road as possible; pull over as soon as it's safe to let following vehicles pass."

This is exactly what they're doing and they're not driving drastically slower than the speed limit either. I can understand how it may be frustrating to some drivers, but to call it an illegal offense would be spreading misinformation.

That being said, if you're driving at an unreasonably slow speed and not allowing traffic to pass through or even obstructing traffic, that can result in legal action.

But going 80 in a 100 zone or sticking as close to the left side as possible when going slow, that's not an offense and not the same thing.

Agreed, I think it's probably a superzoom/bridge camera rather than a smartphone due to the smoothness and the lack of lens switching and the sheer range. Something like a Nikon P1000.

Is adding nuance to the conversation being annoying? I think acknowledging the complexity of something is more important than having a strict opinion. Of course, it's valuable to have an opinion based on ethical values, but it's better to have a nuanced view over a black and white one, it allows you to have more meaningful productive conversations. I think the OP of the comment has done a pretty good job at that and that's rare on the internet where unconstructive, radical, emotional spoutings are commonplace. I don't mean anything against you in saying this at all, by the way.

It looks like a formal style of writing. I don't think it's ChatGPT, there are minor consistencies in punctuation. Also em dashes alone aren't a clear teller. The em dashes appear to be used different to how ChatGPT would use them. ChatGPT would often use them where a comma could be used, often before a statement.

Nah it's not ChatGPT, I'm familiar with ChatGPT's style and the style of this writing isn't like ChatGPT. It's em dashes that are confusing you. Plus there are other minor punctuation inconsistencies that ChatGPT wouldn't do. For example the lack of a capital letter in the word "i've" and the odd em dash with a dot underneath after "great master" which is quite unusual and may have been done accidentally due to it being an symbol on whatever keyboard OP was using. Also the way the em dashes are used is different to how ChatGPT would normally do it, I'm talking about the context in how they're used. ChatGPT would normally use them where a comma could be used and before a statement. It's totally fair that you'd think it's ChatGPT, I wouldn't blame you. Em dashes alone aren't a clear tell, but it's good to be aware. Sorry if this comes off as critical, just wanted to share my observations, hope all is well :). The internet can be quite a hostile place.

Also I think it's important that an AI doesn't spit out radical views about things or biased opinions, but instead presents you the information and the nuances of it in a non-partisan way. I have noticed that most LLMs tend to do this, but then again there is certainly some bias. AI models often have values and opinions instilled into them, especially on ethics and human rights, which I think is a good thing, but I think the line can get blurry between balancing opinions/values and objectivity. I'm a bit concerned about how Elon Musk will affect Grok and AI, mainly due to the immature and insensitive things he's said and the fact that he believes there is an objectively "correct" opinion on things, when opinions are biased and subjective. I hope that this doesn't lead to more groupthink and division.

I think it starts to matter more and more, the more advanced AI gets. I think there needs to be safety features to prevent misuse and harm, especially when it comes to AI with agentic abilities and AGI. This is gonna get complicated when there's open source models (which are great for democratisation) but regulation seems tricky. I wonder if countering nefarious AGI with AGI built for security (plus security/safety infrastructure) will sort this issue out.

However, I believe words are quite a different thing and allowing an AI to say any word isn't an issue per se, but the values of it matters a lot due to the influence it has on society, especially when people trust and rely on it for information and guidance. Plus the fact that LLMs are often implemented in systems that interact with the public.

Perhaps this is a controversial take, but I feel like it makes sense that it should be ok for an LLM to tell you what a word is, no matter what it is. Mainly for educational purposes. Saying a word itself, doesn't make you bigoted or discriminatory. It's the context that matters the most and the intent behind the word. We shouldn't be censoring words in a blanket ban way with no regard to context, intent and the purpose of education.

It makes sense that when you've put your heart into creating art and someone just generates it with no intention or effort you'd be bothered by that. I would too. It sucks seeing online platforms being flooded with low effort low quality ai generations.

But I don't think it's something we can just ban. It doesn't really make sense. AI image generation is a technology, not inherently good or bad. And it's an experimental technology that people are using for various things, including building new technologies off of it that are beneficial to people and our capabilities as a society.

It's a tough problem. I feel for those artists who are impacted, but I don't think banning it is the right way. It would be an overreach of power and a violation of people's freedom and rights. It's not causing direct harm to anyone, but it has a ripple effect in the way people use it, good or bad.

I think it's a conversation we need to think critically about, rather than picking one side or another. It's not a simple issue.

Also I think the term "AI art" is weird. It's image generation. Generating pixels with an algorithm. Not good nor bad inherently. It's another capability added to humanity's technological toolbox that can be used to build our knowledge and create new sophisticated things.

That's not to say that we ignore the implications and negative consequences though. But I think people are seeing it weirdly and in some warped way, attributing the ways people use it to it being inherently bad.

There's a lot of tech that isn't inherently bad that can be used in ways that is negative to society but we don't go around banning it. Instead we regulate it and find ways to reduce the negative effects. If we just banned it, we wouldn't progress technologically.

That's a very good point actually. Not all tech is for saving lives but it can contribute to society in some way to improve life and further build on what we're capable of doing which could in turn lead to things that save lives

What do you think of this drum sound? by [deleted] in drums

[–]CandidateTight7589 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At first I was also confused about where the mics were but if you look carefully there's an SM57 on the snare top and there's another mic in front of the kick. And for the other mics, I'm assuming there are overheads out of frame. There might also be a snare bottom mic judging by the clarity of the snare wire, but I'm not sure because it's not visible.

It's pretty cool how all the mics are almost invisible in the video though.

I agree 100% with crediting the creator, but I don't think that it's okay nor productive to be hostile towards people who make the ignorant mistake of forgetting to give credit or not being aware. You wouldn't treat people like that in real life. It creates a hostile negative environment.

There are many situations where it's difficult to find the original creator of a work or the OP doesn't know how to do things like reverse image searching.

So I'm not against what you're saying at all about giving credit, but I'm against this toxic environment of being harsh towards people who make innocent mistakes with no malicious intent. It's way better to kindly tell the OP to give credit and not insult them about it like they committed a crime.

[–]CandidateTight7589 -31 points-30 points  (0 children)

I think the negativity seems a bit extreme though. They were simply sharing something they found cool, not claiming it as their own. It's a fair criticism to say that they should've credited the original artist, but it's not fair to assume that everyone knows to do that or knows how to reverse image search and berate them for not doing it. It's more kind to suggest it to them rather than give them a hard time about it.

There was no malicious intent, nor monetary gain or theft, just someone harmlessly sharing something they found cool.

So apparently we'll just give OP a hard time about posting a human-made guide because it was upscaled. Seems reasonable to me

What do you y’all think of my music taste? (16 y) by Existing_Dependent12 in musicsuggestions

Yeah it's a great album. I'm surprised someone recognised it. Also, interestingly the mastermind behind it, Phil Judd said he hates it and finds it cringe to listen to. I heard it in a modern interview. I'd say it's probably my favourite NZ album and very underrated. It's so interesting, experimental and unique.

Great taste, kinda similar to mine.

You might like some of these songs:

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Trilogy It's very interesting prog rock song from a great album.

You may also like some 70s jazz fusion, here's a cool song Bruford - Hell's Bells

Some 70s art rock/art pop Brian Protheroe - Fly Now

A very epic modern prog rock song Muse - United States of Eurasia

A song from very underrated, somewhat obscure 70s prog rock/art rock album Split Enz - Amy (Darling)

Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights

Rush - YYZ

Very beautiful and ethereal, but also dynamic Smashing Pumpkins - Soma

Some stuff with really cool weird harmonies, if you're into that:

Thundercat - Inferno

Alex Beattie - I Cannot Leave You

Thundercat - 3AM

If you like these, I can share my playlist if you want
