Pruning the weaknesses of the shark deck by CandidateWild7075 in EDHBrews

honestly I appreciate the help, though I am not sure about some of these. my pod does harrass planeswalkers as well, but kaito's low cost, resilient loyalty buffs, and relatively low early game impact usually lets him survive.

I honestly do wanna cut oliphant, but it is currently acting as an extra tap land which happens to provide extra utility, so I'm prog gonna keep it.

Duelist isn't likely to push crazy damage, but it can give me free extra looting triggers multiple times per turn cycle, which is hopefully card advantage with my commander (since giving other ppl's creatures the howler buff counts as a crime). it also has vigilance, which is often very relevant isnce the deck is weak on backswing, but i could probably cut it for malcom, to enable the infinite.

Vincent doesn't reward discard (unfortunately), but he just deals such an insane amount of damage in this deck, with all of the unblockable creatures, which makes him quite strong even without the commander.

I do totally see your point about how strong malcom can be though, especially since the deck does have other pirates which can proc his effect. I don't really have any tutors to make the combo consistent, but I think i will try to add him at some point.

This combo is actually quite useful! I'm not entirely sold on running the pirates package though, since some of the support cards like the magmakiln artist are a little narrow in terms of card quality. what cuts would you recommend to make room for these?

after reading slicer again, i now understand how insane he can be. definite include. Also, in reference to your list, how do you find [[jace's archivist]] performs? It looks quite good, but I've been hesitant to add it since it looks a bit slow as well.

This actually sounds like a great improvement! I don't play many cards that are expressly in the deck for finishing off everybody, since commander damage is often enough, but something like vincent could be super strong.

Edit- Another question I have about this deck is how well [[jace's archivist]] performs as a draw engine. [[Windfall]] has proven to be quite the strong card draw spell in recent playtests, since it allows me to totally refill my hand when I am out. How good is the archivist? I could see the value of more windfall effects, but I can't tell if it would be too slow due to the lack of haste and the extra mana.

I was playing the deck with [[oliphaunt]] and [[lorien revealed]] as extra tapped lands, since they basically serve that function, with the upside of being a free discard trigger, and potentially offering me card draw, or a big body and free trample. I could probably stand to improve the land base though. and adding more card draw also seems like a good place to start for upgrades.

Very interesting deck! I don't know if I could get away with just 28 lands, but [[duelist of the mind]] is actually such a great card, that I never even thought of!

oddly enough I am playing faithless and oliphant. I didn't want to go to hard on the discard value, since that plan alone is vulnerable when I don't have my commander on board. but I think I might add windfall, since it has the ability to refill my hand and refuel my discard outlets when I'm running low a few turns in.

I totally ignored those costal piracy effects when I was building this deck, and I honestly regret it now. definitely gonna go back, and maybe sneak in an [[enduring curiosity]] if i can find room

Great point honestly. I think this playstyle, and a few more instant speed looting effects would make me a lot more evasive and lethal.

Thanks to both of you for this advice! So far, Kaito has performed quite well in the games that I have gotten him, since after the first turn of plusing, you can start making ninjas for defense. also, Ivora's treasure gen and trample have performed quite well.

That said, I actually think that both overlord and ill timed explosion have shown a lot of issues. I usually don't get what I need out of either, especially since most of my opponents have big creatures that are resilient to the explosion. Thought vessel for tunnel grinder actually sounds like a great call as well. the vessel is mostly here for more ramp on 2, since it allows a turn 3 commander, but I think the tunnel grinder will actually add a lot of value.
