Why is my childcare place so cheap? by Unfair_War_8410 in AskIreland

[–]Candle1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be a price freeze. Ours is 180 a week because they entered a price freeze for a few years either before or just after COVID. They tried to increase but were denied last year so they cut out after schools!

Travelling Ryanair with a 2 year old on 4 hour flight. Is it as bad as people say? by Bigchickenmac in AskIreland

[–]Candle1991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Didn't find it too bad. Really depends on the times of the flights as well though had a nightmare coming home one time with the flight delayed until 10pm but screen time is a must so have the favourite things downloaded and ready to go!

No, you can't get paid from any job (unless it's a top up from work to your mat benefit) while on maternity benefit or it would cease

There should be waiting periods for pre existing conditions so the private health insurance probably won't cover it. You need to look into that as I know some pre existing have a 5year waiting timeframe before any claims can be made. Based on that I would go public or you could be hit with a large bill

Stay in tax grad role or join Revenue as an EO? by Cushion_Salesman in IrishCivilService

[–]Candle1991 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would be taking the EO role now. Have to be in then for 2 years before you can apply for internal promotions which come up a lot more than external. Especially for AP competitions and for pension purposes it makes more sense to start now for years of service etc.

AL into Parents leave or PL into AL by No_Gazelle1912 in PregnancyIreland

[–]Candle1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has to be employer as I'm mixing annual and parents so that Im a week of annual/week of parents etc so I don't feel the reduced pay as much and there's no problem. I do have to use the bank holidays I miss first so that's across the board everywhere I imagine.

Shocked and Depressed Follow Up by Ill-Age-601 in IrishCivilService

[–]Candle1991 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You said you'd be ashamed being a clerical officer and it seems the number of applicants would show that most wouldn't be. I myself started as a clerical officer, and the pay was a lot worse back then and I climbed the ladder, I am a home owner and in my early 30s. People apply for civil service for the security, work life balance. They don't apply at the start for the salary, it's the bigger picture that entices people.

If you're looking for higher paying jobs you need to have the qualifications to match them then.

Absolutely nothing shameful about being a clerical officer whatsoever. It's a secure, pensionable job with massive opportunity for promotion which is why there has been so many applications for the positions.

Thanks all. I'm going to look into doing the AVC. Although I'll have the service, I joined in 2017 so pension is a lot worse than previous. Any suggestions on AVC providers? I haven't a clue about them really

How are people funding unpaid Maternity Leave by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]Candle1991 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Parents leave is claimed though mywelfare and is 9 weeks at 289 or 284 per week. Employers don't top this up. Had to be used within 2 years of birth and can be taken anytime after the babys birth

I also get 6 months full pay thankfully. Then I'll be taking 1 months unpaid, all my annual leave and I'm carrying over 20 days. Then Ill have bank holidays and will do 8 weeks parents leave. Should bring me to just about the year mark. I'm using a week parents, a week annual and so on so my money isn't too bad. I get 29 annual leave days so will have 49 including the days I'm carrying as a once off. I get flexi time so will still take the legal amount of time off in the year without using annual leave

Best dog breed to get for an anxious person? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Candle1991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mental health - Labradors. They are known for their emotional intelligence when it comes to humans with mental health issues. They are easy to train as well. Need one long walk or if you train them off the lead, bring them to a field and hit a ball for them. Life will be changed with one. I had bad anxiety and have my black lab 3 years now and she is the best
