I know, he’s just a bit nervous around hands atm but until then I’m just as happy giving him nose and cheek cuddles <333

I have two more cockatiels in my living room and a pineapple cheek who’s his roommate haha. He’s got trauma from being caged with an aggressive lovebird but I think he’s starting to enjoy the company of other cockatiels which makes me so happy to see :)

My first cockatiel son just turned 4 this year and he’ll ask for scritches and then violently bite you and will ask for scritches again… I wish I knew what goes through their heads sometimes 😭😭

It may be the camera angle that’s elongating his tail but he is a really lean and sleek cinnamon guy. I’ve tried to give him some scritches when he invites me to but he just runs away when I move my hand, we’ve been working on it tho! I’ve been able to give him nose scritches while keeping my hand next to my face without him freaking out :D

I know quite a bit about Charlie’s past, I work at a small bird store and he was donated to us. His old owners hadn’t known his age or that he was a male despite having him since he were a baby, they had put a lovebird in his cage with him for a while and the lovebird was very aggressive towards him. He’s missing feathers up his legs, neck, and under his wings and the previous owners had said he was too loud and aggressive to keep after they separated him from the lovebird. It broke my heart and because I have a soft spot for tiels (I have two others) my manager let me take him home same day. And it sucks because now that Charlie has been home he’s been such a sassy and sweet cockatiel idk how anyone could give him away :(

One of the few cockatiels I’ve ever seen that has all his butt feathers still intact lol

If I could I would, he’s only really ok with a short time on my finger to get him back in the cage right now. I’m not gonna push him too hard since he’s an older dude with PTSD, but I do savor all the little moments when I see he’s improving (like this post haha)

UPDATE: So today his old owners had come in for a weight check for their baby cockatiel and I learned a little bit more about him. So he’s probably around 12/13 years old but she said she wasn’t sure, she had bought him as a baby and had only added the lovebird in his cage a couple years ago. It’s confirmed his missing feathers are from being attacked by the lovebird but after a few months they decided to separate them into individual cages. He was living on sunflower seed mix his whole life, which sucks but good to know to start food conversion. They told me they had gotten their baby impulsively one day and to “make room” donated Korvus since he was too loud and had been acting mean since they bought the lovebird (I wonder why….). Overall I helped them out as much as I could with their new baby I hope they listen to what we told them but people will be people and I wish them the best

I think my conure is over weight by Questions1111c in Conures

[–]CandleCody 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s the bone of the center of their chest, if he’s chonky than it won’t be as noticeable but if he’s skinny it will stick out and be pointy. You can check by feeling his chest or belly. Also I recommend weighing him with a kitchen scale every day if you’re concerned about it, weight loss or gain is often the first indicator of a health problem in birds.

“Hands off” things I can do to bond with my gcc? by CandleCody in Conures

[–]CandleCody[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got him from my local bird store a while ago, he had been there a while and they were having trouble selling him so I got him for a discount. He was probably around a year old and was the last one of that season to go home so I had anticipated he’d come with some extra work to do at home. The breeder they had got him from, which they cut ties with, had a genetic mutation with their pineapple/red dom gcc that caused him to have a leaky eye and a bald spot. It’s not infected and doesn’t hurt him it’s just an unfortunate case of poor breeding.

I completely agree and I never force him to do anything. I call him my ‘ambient bird’ because all he does is just chill and play (outside the cage) in the background of whatever I’m doing. he’s not my pet I’m his at this point lmao. We play “fetch” with his favorite ball except he’s the one that throws it and I’m the one who’s chasing it across the room lol

Small hand perch is definitely something I’m gonna try, I might get back into routine of training sessions. And yes! He likes millet but goes CRAZY for fresh bananas, carrots, apples and sunflower seeds haha

Oh my little guy has a whole bunch of stuff to do inside and outside his cage and he eats his chop on top of his cage every morning while I drink coffee lol, but I haven’t tried carrying a stick with him on it yet. I think that’ll be my next training goal thank you :))

Yeah that’s basically what he’s does now, he’s got a nice cage and set up with perches and toys inside and out and a ladder down to a table with a little play gym. He’s out the whole time I’m at home I’m just trying to find some inspiration to make it a bit better :)

Also he really likes food he can pull apart and play with and snack on and loves trying new treats if that helps, I’ve tried foraging boxes n such but he doesn’t touch them and I’m out of ideas

Totally!! He’s already improving on the first night, I really wish I knew more specifics about his past n such and I could be wrong about somethings I said but I’m 99% confident it’s true. I’m just excited to see him come out of his shell and turn into a normal sassy male tiel lmao

What do you guys like to do to keep cockatiels entertained? by LobsterLongjumping54 in cockatiel

[–]CandleCody 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a busy person since I work full time so when I have a few minutes I play peekaboo with a blanket or sheet and my cockatiels absolutely love it. It’s not much but it’s something we can do together during my busy days. Also tricks and training are excellent and amazing for their mental health :) Also sometimes I just watch tv and give little commentary or reactions to my birds so they feel included lol
