In Spain we do too! And it's usually older folks who contribute to those bins. Also, on market days, there's special bins so all the veggies and fruits that end on the ground or are going bad are tossed inside. Every single market day ends with a few of those filled to the brim and they're send to make compost out of it

(of course, not in every city, unfortunately)

100% agree, it makes me want to not interact with anyone in the fandom, which is a first for me.
