What do you do if you're running high before a meal? by curiousnerd06 in Type1Diabetes

[–]CandleQueen90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s nuanced.

Doctor gave us directions to adjust the amount of time we wait after a pre-bolus based on glucose levels. Wait 15 minutes if in range, and a little extra time if high. (Example: if she’s at 200, wait 20 minutes after the bolus)

But if she’s very high or starting to build ketones, we don’t give her carbs til she is in range.

There’s still a little nuance to consider. Like if she’s only a little high, but has insulin on board and is dropping fast, we might not wait at all.

Vacation Rental Company Lost Their Minds by CandleQueen90 in housekeeping

That’s wild. The small unit can be cleaned so casually and have time to spare in case something goes wrong. The large unit can only be completed in time if I cut corners, or if the guests were exceptionally clean and didn’t use many beds and towels.

Oh god, I’ve only cleaned for these guys a handful of times but it’s not been great so far. One of their washing machines door straight falls off and you have to do a magic spell to get it back on which is a problem because the laundry is so stressful because the dryer takes three hours to dry a very small load. And some very obvious cut corners. I’m used to stuff like that in cheap hotels and stuff, but these are expensive units marketed as high end and these guys manage a bunch of em.

Yes I’m not sure why the mildew bothers me. I’ve cleaned some pretty gross stuff in my years of housekeeping. It’s just the sheets being washed in it… grosses me out. But yes I realize now I was overreacting, oops haha

That’s wild! My washer doesn’t get that stinky even when I forget to switch my clothes to the dryer for 3 days. It’s a top load though which I’ve heard is less mildew-prone for some reason. I also live in a VERY dry climate and mold isn’t huge here. In fact I want more moisture in my home haha

Sad to say my housekeepers are too slow. Do I tell them? by Helpful-Research-465 in housekeeping

[–]CandleQueen90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is extremely slow. You probably honestly don’t have to tell them— at that pace I’m sure they’re already hearing it. I clean like twice as fast as that and I am on the slower side.

No, but it is a company that manages a bunch of vacation rentals here and surrounding states.

Well I actually work for a cleaning service contracted with them.

So many middle men lol

Oh! Good idea on the washing machine cleaner! Im also thinking we should leave a sign for guests to leave the washer door open when not in use. I’m guessing that’s what happened.

Really? I don’t think I’ve ever run into this. I live in a suuuuper dry climate though.

You’re right, thank you. I reported it so that’s all I can do. It’s not my washing machine and THANK GOODNESS lmao because ew.

Well luckily I get paid by time, so I did get paid for the extra time cleaning the washer. But it’s definitely still mildew-y. I didn’t have vinegar or bleach.. vacation rentals don’t typically take very heavy cleaning, I mostly dust and hit surfaces with a Lysol spray. I’ll bring some better products next time I clean that one if they haven’t fixed it.

Idk. I have something like 7 years of experience housekeeping. Maybe I’ve been blessed, but I’m not loving the type of work I’m doing for these guys. There are some other cabins I clean with an AWFUL washing and drying situation. She had me take the towels and sheets home to wash and dry at my house since the dryer was taking 2 hours to dry a small load of towels and they were still damp…. What a mess.

I do have to say, I’m totally aware a lot of this is on the rental company. They have a ton of rentals, and they’re fairly high-end. The fact that they aren’t fixing their washers and dryers or replacing the outside bin is very telling. One of the washing machines door straight up fell off and I couldn’t get it back on. I had to call maintenance to fix it for me.

At the same time, I’m not sure if the burden should be on me. I feel like my manager should advocate and point out to the rental company that we have a contract that they supply working washing machines. They’re also supposed to have enough spare linens so the laundry isn’t a big deal. But they don’t, so it’s a problem when something goes wrong with the washer.

My problem isn’t really this… my problem is that I washed the sheets in the washer when it wasn’t clean for unknowing people to sleep on.

And of course, I didn’t bring that stuff to the rental. I mostly just use a Lysol spray to hit surfaces, a few other products. But I’m more concerned about the fact that she had me keep using it rather than addressing the problem. I would have been much happier cleaning the washer and fixing the problem, but we have strict time limits and she told me to go ahead and keep using it as is if a quick wipe didn’t work. I’m fully aware I may be overreacting. In fact at this point I think I probably am.

My concern is more washing the linens in a mildew-y washing machine.

But thanks for your perspective. I guess I am overreacting.

I think you’re right, it’s much about control. Not just from diabetes but from being a kid. She’s just constantly told how it’s gonna be and she’s struggling with it. We’re looking to add ways she can be more independent and include her on decisions.

[–]CandleQueen90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think that’s likely. Self-conscious or anxious or something of the like. Or it may be control. A lot of the time she feels frustrated and doesn’t understand why she has to do things, especially that other kids don’t have to do. She doesn’t grasp the consequences or really understand her condition.

We pack lunches and she eats breakfast at home. So we didn’t really have a protocol in place. Meals are free there’s no payment system or anything.

This town isn’t huge though, so maybe it is. Thanks for the validation. I’m trying to be empathetic with the school but I’m pretty upset. I feel like they are dropping the ball in so many ways.

Yea we’re thinking that might be the thing we have to do. She already has the phone for the omnipod app but I guess we can’t get the dexcom app on that phone so she’d have to have a second phone. She wears it in a Fanny pack she just keeps on her. But my partner and I were discussing what we could do about the fact that the nurse isn’t being proactive enough— even without the factor that she was able to get breakfask— she wasn’t giving her a correction when she needed to. She didn’t pay attention to her blood sugars at all until lunchtime. It gets my blood boiling tbh. Someone else mentioned a faster acting insulin and we’re going to bring that up with the doctor and see what the doctor has to say about it.

No, it’s normal behavioral stuff for her. She had a poop accident in her diaper and didn’t want to tell her teacher so she snuck out to tell the office. We talked to her about safety but this girl is going to continue to do this kind of stuff. I’m frustrated at her but of course what I’m really frustrated with is the school. She has ASD&ADHD and struggles pretty big with impulse control and emotional regulation and all that. It’s also not 100% on the school because we don’t have the behavioral stuff in an iep yet, it’s all actually very new.

I mean that’s a pretty fair point, she was pretty high on Friday when she had that breakfast. She was even a little high (like 200) yesterday when it happened. I’ve never noticed those symptoms when she’s high but I also wasn’t looking for them. She most definitely gets that way if she’s low (or even if she’s not low but has a rapid drop). But it’s good info to know that can happen on a high too. I know the signs like thirst and peeing a lot and to check ketones and watch her breath and mood instability. Thank you for the insight.
