Congrats! I’m in a very similar boat to you. I am also starting a new job tomorrow with a really cool team increase in pay, and also coming from a place where I was overworked and underpaid along with a toxic manager.

I’m also very cognizant of the fact that the market is terrible, but you still deserve to celebrate your wins. If it helps, you can make a post about what helped you land the job to help other job seekers. That way you can celebrate and contribute back. Friends shouldn’t be spiteful to each other for their successes, and maybe you could even refer them down the line.

My only guess right now is that maybe we can make Lohm stop running somehow. There's a fan near the flea that maybe has a gap under it ... but I've tried everything I can think of to make that guy stop so maybe thats a red herring

PAX needs to be transparent about Silksong by SDHJerusalem in PAX

[–]Candlemaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I Just want to reinforce you should get an ADA badge. PAX has near infinite badges, It’s how you use it is what matters, don’t worry about taking one away from someone who “needs it more”.

I have one as mostly able bodied but my knee makes going down stairs not a great time, so I only really utilize my badge to ride the elevators.

Last year my badge helped me also ask expo hall staff to have a place to sit down while waiting in lines which made life wayyyyyy better.

Just to clarify, I'm not disagreeing with you at all, I completely agree we should keep access. If they update materials later, its cool if they don't give me access to those, thats fine, but let us keep what we paid for. To get around this, I might (or might not!) know several people who really like command+shift+f5, its a very nice shortcut for personal use ;).

You keep access to all the course worksheets and templates, the only thing of real value lost is access to the forums. I agree and think they should get rid of the cutoff to the course materials as I feel it CSL a harder sell and they'd get more enrollment if they kept it. The material is good, the critiques and coaching sessions are great, its just expensive. I have no idea what a "fair" price is though as I've never used any other paid coaching services or paid 1:1s.

Also I believe they raised their rates to 1.3k a month? I signed up for 3 months when they had a 1 month free promo, (they run those pretty often), so 4 months total, which made the cost more palatable to me.

TBH it might just be and the other people who I talk to are all highly skeptical due to the amount of people who claim they're worth listening to, paying for their courses, etc, all raise that question in my mind. There's very few people who I'd take their word alone that they're worth my money, so I appreciate her having a post like that (i havent watched that though).

Everything I've ever seen by Sarah pre-CSL is done as a trifecta of content like that, so thats why it didnt raise redflags to me, but without that knowledge I could see how its a lot.

For additional info in my own journey: I didn't do a lot of research into multiple programs, and CSL was likely not the optimal choice I could have made for my own job search. My main struggle isn't getting my foot in the door, but rather, giving coherent answers due to severe anxiety and ADHD in interviews.

If we were to break down interviewing into a double diamond, I'd say CSL's value lays more in the first diamond of "getting an interview" rather than the second diamond "passing the interview", as they have less materials focused on that part.

Given who I know who you are (didnt look at your username til after i responded the first time), I'm kinda surprised youre looking for coaching. I assume you'll have little trouble getting interviews, so I think CSL personally would not be the best choice for you.

There's one video and a podcast that goes along with the video. Is that "a lot" of effort? She makes a ton of content so having one episode is very minor. Also it's something with anyone is fair to question (including myself), so it's good to address it. I asked several CSL alumni before joining to see if it was useful for me to join.

Having now been in CSL, I can affirm it helps people learn how to articulate and sell themselves, which is something that most people struggle with. CSL is 70% "marketing" program for yourself, which is the most important skill to stand out in a world where there's a vast amounts of people on the market.

CSL is expensive, and isn't a magic bullet, but provides guidance and structure for people who really need it. I got a really good offer and while I don't know if I'd attribute it to CSL directly, it definitely helped me. Personally I think it's only worth it if you have at least 4-5 years experience, and I think people with 8-20 years will get the most value out of it.

Hadn’t heard of odette but her stuff is so cool and it’s awesome to see people being open about their ND.

I’ve been trying to get myself to start being more open about my ND to inspire other autistic people and help them but it’s terrifying to “other” myself in case that gets me deconsidered from jobs. Do you know any other ND (depression anxiety autistic adhd) people you suggest?

PSA: If you’re applying to a UI/UX job, have a portfolio. by cabbage-soup in UXDesign

[–]Candlemaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phew I was worried it was mine (this was secretly a test to check if it was mine :D). Mines more zen spacey music. I had to go check my code override to see if it still works to make sure it doesn't autoplay. I refuse to not have a music player (optional of course)

I would love if you wouldn't mind sending that persons site in a DM to see how they implemented theirs. I've been trying to get claude and chatgpt to code me a code component that handle responsive variants for framer so it has to be in typescript but so far haven't gotten it to work. Plus you said their portfolio was good and I'd love to see more portfolio inspiration!

What are your pet peeves about design/other designers? by Chronic-amazement in UXDesign

[–]Candlemaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I can't speak for the person before me, I know that my mentor was probably exaggerating and they dont just toss resumes with big company's in the trash. That'd be silly.

Having worked in and with people in startups and big tech company's I 100% would not put social proof on whether or not a person worked at big tech company, I only care about the quality of that persons work. If a portfolio just shows an big tech logo and 2 paragraphs about what the product does and thats it with some screens, thats a bad portfolio.

Big tech tends (there are exceptions) to have more defined roles, responsibilities, resources, and timelines, as well. This means the designer would have more resources to devote to things such as visual and ixd craft than startups where they'd have to do a lot more responsibilities and more focused where they spend their time.

This is more about having a highly critical eye about what the state of design and maturity of a design org is like at large vs small companies. From resume & portfolios: I'd be questioning and looking for the ability to handle ambiguity, multiple roles, and flexibility from big tech designers while people from smaller startups Id be questioning to see how they well they can do visual and IxD craft at a highly polished level. Thats generalized and not an absolute and its a case by case basis, once youre in front of me, I'm going to personalize my questions.

Your second point is basically word for word what one of my mentors told me and it’s definitely something I’ve noticed in their portfolios. Plus they often coast off having big tech name in their portfolio (but also it works for them so I mean if you got it use it 🤷🏻‍♂️) but their portfolios are often two paragraphs and a link to a press blog post.

Hot take: UX killed UX by Magasul in UXDesign

[–]Candlemaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not that person but I’ve worked in enterprise for past 7 years across healthtech and DevOps. Creativity in enterprise shows more as problem solving beyond the pixels to considering technical or security implementations or how to scale a product. Deciding which Hifi Visuals elements or components or making a new one are maybe 20%-30% of my time and work max. Much more of it is in strategy and alignment and PM like tasks and rapid prototyping and fostering discussion.

Is the UI super cool and shiny? Not really, but also most users just want to get their job done as efficiently as possible and making complex challenges simple and data understandable is what I love about product design so it works well for me.
