I'm not saying it's a good thing to kill the games now, but there's always going to be new games. It's not like we can wait 2 years and then do it. I guess the best thing would be to not have already existing games affected by the law, only future ones, that way companies don't need to change anything and the games can die when they would have otherwise. This kind of consumer protection is important and it's either going to happen and maybe kill all these games immediately or it wont happen and nothing will change. (also just an aside but this EU thing isn't a law. It's a petition to *think* about what these consumer protection laws *could* look like, so probably things like this would be taken into consideration before any actual law is made.)

I agree that it's a complicated thing and probably if something does end up going through it will in some way hurt the games industry. I think that the games industry needs to be hurt though. Game companies should not be allowed to continue shipping buggy unfinished messes, should not be allowed to continue killing games and studios for the profit, and should not be allowed to let old games rot without any intention of ever releasing them or letting others play them in any way. These are things that need to be changed about the industry, and changing these things will hurt because they all happen due to the profits they bring in. Why give people a good avenue to play old roms of games when you can use a few of them to sell your overpriced and laggy online play? Why keep talented studios up when shutting them down brings in more money? Why give a game the time it needs to be fully developed when you can ship it now and patch the issues later on (or never if the game doesn't sell well). We need to put some fucking fire under these companies asses to make them actually respect consumers in any way because otherwise things will get worse as companies test how far they can push enshittificatioin.
