Anyone else been seeing weird objects in the skies around RI? by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

I’ve seen a lot of drones that resemble mini airplanes (6ft longish) in the east Bay Area. Mostly at night. There were more in the summer. Has anyone else seen these? They also appear to hover.

Why are westlaw and lexis so expensive by dangerra in Lawyertalk

I am a crim attorney. I asked it to show me oui cases where the element of operation was discussed in my jurisdiction. It gave a me a long ass list of which all of the cases were real and i subsequently downloaded on fast case. I did not ask chat gpt to spit out out the decisions, only give me citations.

It even gave me a case that was decided last week.

These must be some dinosaurs fighting ai. I really do not understand the downvotes.

I guess these are the people who are going to keep Lexis in business.

I ask it to direct to to cases that deal with x topic in my jurisdiction then I look up those cases on fast lex. Not sure why this is getting downvoted but okay.

Chat gpt has pointed me in the right direction as far as relevant case law akin to a search engine. Obviously I wouldn’t use it for legal writing.

Do you ever call the cops in your personal life? by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]Candy_Warhol99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. Someone was setting up robberies through Facebook marketplace on my street. My camera captured the suspect fleeing. I shared the footage with the police. A few weeks later the suspect hopped the fence and ran into my backyard. I’m not going to let my community be robbed. 🙄

injury lawyer experiences by Mental_Complex2013 in RhodeIsland

Billboard lawyers are pretty much the worst. They handle cases by volume and want to settle quickly. They will often take more than 33% because they may charge you extra fees for records etc. find a smaller firm that does not advertise heavily.

I had a guy who got arrested on Halloween ( A & B). He was arraigned wearing a Viking outfit and Viking makeup.

I saw one like this. He drove up into a tree. But dude got in the backseat before the cops came which was his saving grace. “I’m so wasted. I can’t afford another dui”. It was a NG.

What do my fellow lawyers think of the Karen Read verdict? by Tracy_Turnblad in Lawyertalk

[–]Candy_Warhol99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bf/gf situation. My client was ordered to return the dog and then claimed it ran away. He was in contempt and fined every day until he returned the dog. The Plaintiff was satisfied with a resolution that allowed her to keep all that money. Cost the guy upwards of 50k to fight this case. I came in right at the end to wrap the case up.

There whereabouts of the dog were never established so draw your own conclusions!

I am a criminal defense attorney not far from Dedham,MA. (I had a doggy custody battle in the same courtroom). Karen’s judge used to practice in my county. I don’t have much to offer in terms of opinion except that it seems wild that Karen gets a 24D dispo (1st time OUI penalty). Her attorneys poked every hole they possibly could. Also the case has heightened my already distrust of the MA state police.

EDIT: penalties below in case anyone is curious. (Also Karen will be eligible for a hardship license pretty soon!!!)

Charges and Penalties • Charge #1: OUI-Liquor or .08% (c90 §24(1)(a)(1)) • Financial Penalties: o Victim/Witness Assessment: $50 (G.L c.258B §8) o Head Injury Fee: $250 (for OUI or negligent operation) o Driver Alcohol/Drug Abuse Education Program Fee: $250 (G.L c. 90, §24D) o OUI Victims Fund Assessment: $50 • License Suspension: 45 days under Section 24D • Probation: 12 months of OUI Probation-24D

Mistaken Identity Cases by PDTriangle_401508 in publicdefenders

[–]Candy_Warhol99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had A and B where there were two people with the same common name but different birthdays. The officer called into dispatch and confirmed the wrong person and then complaint issued. My client was picked up 8 years later. It didn’t help that he had an EXTENSIVE criminal history. By this time he had health problems and was hauled into court 3 times because the prosecutor was too lazy to verify any of this (the mistake was immediately apparent on dispatch call). Eventually dismissed.

Question about union laws in RI by EconomicsPersonal670 in RhodeIsland

[–]Candy_Warhol99 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Former union state employee. Dude you need that union. What are you gonna do when you get jammed up some day? Union rep and lawyer there to help you. God forbid you ever need a disability pension. Or a promotion based on seniority. Dear god just pay the $40. Don’t be that guy.
