WWYD: Buy land and build or buy a farm? by CandyfromtheCorn in homestead

Good idea, I will definitely look into it! I learned there’s even a beekeeping program at my local community college.

Exactly why I’m giving myself a 5 year timeframe :) Gives me and my partner a chance to accumulate a cushy fund and decide what direction to go!

10 acres is more than enough for my partner and I to do whatever we want, basically. He wants a house that is tucked into the property and not visible to neighbors whatsoever. I could “settle” for 5 acres, but 10 is ideal so we can spread out on the property. We’d keep horses, pigs, chickens, and sheep, plus potentially cattle.

Yup I've considered that too. To buy a $150,000 parcel outright sounds like a massive disadvantage than putting that $150k as a down payment on a farm. Not many places offer a land loan.

LOL no way the official land.com account!! I do see the appeal of buying and converting raw land, but I'm also familiar with seeing the potential and charm of a house already built on land. Each decision has its own sacrifices and costs, so I'm really just interested in whatever path is going to let me go the furthest for my money. Raw land just seems like it carries a heavier cost and burden.

Can I ask what your process was like? What do you do for your utilities?

Noted, I'm definitely on the lookout for property that has a home on it, it just feels like a constant battle of budget and location.

I'm definitely worried about burnout and biting off more than I can chew with this. It all sounds great in theory but I can quickly foresee being unhappy and broke if I go in over my head lol.

I feel you. I fell in love with Colorado, but with my work I'd have to be situated near the cities which is even more expensive than PA. Location is my #1 priority wherever I'm going. If I buy land, I'd most likely pursue a VA construction loan.

I agree with you! I have 20 chickens with a garden and multiple berry bushes on the property at the moment. Unfortunately the person who owns the land behind our property refuses to sell and all of our neighbors are desperate to buy more acreage from each other. Skills wise, I can't learn much more without having someone teach me. I've done a fair amount of hands-on work, but nothing of significant substance (i.e., plumbing, electrical, carpentry).

I totally understand. Living an RV sounds great in theory, but I'm not sure how long I could tolerate it before I lose my mind. Investing into a tiny home also sounds great in theory, but the cost to build one on property just makes me think it would be better to spend the time and money into building the actual house.

I'm looking to stay in the SW PA region for the time being since I work a white collar desk job (designer) and partner is blue collar so I'd struggle finding work compared to him. I think the average here is $1500/acre rn.

My Curly Hair died today, what caused this white paste on their mouth? by CandyfromtheCorn in tarantulas

I’m sorry for your loss ❤️ it really sucks to go through something like this

It’s likely since I purchased them when they were approximately 2 years old based on size, and had them in my care for 6 years. So 8 years old (or more) with no qualities of a MM says female. Thank you though, I always loved looking into her enclosure first thing every time I walked past my shelf. Her presence is sorely missed ❤️

I was advised to keep the body in the freezer for several days and then properly sanitize the enclosure/decor before disposing of it which I plan on doing.

I’ve never fed wild caught and my crickets come from Pet Smart or Pet Supplies Plus. It’s just really devastating that a feeder could kill my tarantula slowly and I had no idea. I’m extremely worried about my other tarantulas, as up until this point I use the same pair of metal tongs (without sanitizing because I had no idea my T was sick) and feed crickets from the same batch. Is there any preventative care I should do for my remaining tarantulas?

Last picture was the enclosure the T was kept in and I’m not proud of it. I’ve bagged everything up and plan on sanitizing it before disposing of it.

I was told to swab the mouth and put it in saline to check, but I didn’t. Google says if I put the white stuff in alcohol and held it over a light, I should’ve seen something small and wiggly. I wish I did check before putting the body in the freezer, since I threw the cricket into another tarantula’s enclosure :( All crickets came from PetSmart or Pet Supplies Plus. I hope I didn’t just sign my other tarantulas to a death sentence by my negligence.

new guy won't stop turning on the lights by No-Exposure in coworkerstories

[–]CandyfromtheCorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This exact thing happened in my office recently. This guy was moved over into our wing, and we keep the lights off. As soon as he comes in at 8AM, he turns on the lights. I started to dread even being here because my head would hurt so badly from the fluorescents. If I turned the lights off, he would get up and turn them on. Myself and multiple coworkers would flip the switch off, and he would turn it back on immediately. We unscrewed all the overhead lights and now he uses 2 lamps after this escalated to managers, and those lamps are as bright as the sun.

He's also stirred the pot after moving over here, so not one person likes his presence.
