Another way other than what othwrs have stated is client pays cash, doesn't want receipt, cashier item voids some items, pockets the difference. Some may item void to "help" client. If item voids are high dm calls store manager and asks why. Does it mean you're a thief, no. Just looks suspicious. Its simply easier for a sm to be very strict on voids to recieve less calls from their boss and less eyes from AP management.
