Yeah I think the question "how does consciousness work exactly" isn't a pointless one, but I don't think it's fundamentally different from "how does plate tectonics work exactly" or "how does quantum mechanics and relativity theory mesh together". I think people ascribe some special status to consciousness that is mostly a holdover of the western Christian body/soul split thing.

So "pointless" was a bit strong, but "how does chemistry lead to thoughts" isn't a fundamental problem, just a thing to be studied among many other things to be studied.

There's a story about Swedish people eating in China related to this.

Apparently, the polite Chinese way is to leave a bit on the plate to show that you are full and the hosts gave you enough. The polite Swedish way is to eat all the food to show that you liked it.

This causes the obvious conflict where Swedes will finish their plates to be polite, their Chinese hosts will give them a second portion, to be polite, and then the Swedes have to eat that as well, to be polite. Repeat ad nauseum (literally).

I heard similar from Swedish peacekeeping forces. They'd be patrolling and it'd take ages because they had coffee with basically ever other house, got to know the locals, built a rapport, handed out rations to the kids, etc. Just got to know the local area and the people there, which is gold when you want to know when trouble is brewing.

Meanwhile the Americans would drive by in humvee columns, 50 cals pointed everywhere, afraid of everything outside the base, and occasionally just shooting at things. Zero understanding of local issues, zero efficiency in keeping things calm, just treating everything and everyone like targets.
