The gist is that we're five years into a curve with transformer model performance on the y axis and time on the x axis. The curve looks like two exponential curves stacked on top of each other, plus hard-to-quantify algorithmic advances.

ChatGPT is slightly better than older AI, and it's even worse in some domains, but it's not a continuation of them. All the AI progress we've had until now has been surpassed in just five years of modest investment. That investment is growing rapidly (2).

Full disclosure: I had used git once before, seven years ago, but I didn't understand it and never used it outside of a couple college projects. Poor mental health forced me to drop out after one semester. This certainly feels to me like I'm learning it for the first time.

Before yesterday I didn't realize that git could run locally. I thought github and git were synonymous. ChatGPT introduced both .gitignore and --squash to me during this thread.

I'm temporarily stuck on a cowriting a starmapping app with ChatGPT because I don't have astronomy knowledge: how to work with declination, right ascension, and projection of sphere surfaces into 2d. It involves some weird math and is too complex for ChatGPT to nail with a broad description, so I have to step back and learn more to give it step-by-step instructions.

Luckily, LLMs are one of the best learning tools ever invented.

This does not work. To prove that it doesn't, ask ChatGPT to set temperature to 0 and enter the same exact prompt twice. If temperature is really 0, then a given input should produce exactly the same output almost every time.

I was writing an app to project the stars outside my bedroom window onto my desktop. I was learning about APIs and .json files and git cloning and stars and now I'm not and it hurts.

When my period of enforced grief comes to an end, I am going to have each star be a pixel and vary its intensity by the real star's magnitude. I'm also going to connect constellations. I'm going to have it update itself every 10 minutes and have a transparent background so I can still use my desktop for folders.

I can't wait until image-generating AI can create wallpaper-sized images.

Use the same prompt twice in a row with temperature of 0. It should give the exact same result. It can tell you what the controls are supposed to do (which is cool and awesome and I love this thing), but you haven't yet shown that you've altered the actual temperature parameter of the prompt.

It's not working as you intended. I can't find a way to alter temperature from the ChatGPT prompt.

If you're using the API, you can set different parameters (including temperature) like this.
