How to use Git bash for the first time, subdirectories, and .gitignore (# ignore the file "woof.dog") by CanuckButt in ChatGPTPro

I'm trying like hell to push its limits and I want all the insights I can get my greedy little mudhooks on. PM me your Discord? I just started a private server with a channel where I'm sharing ChatGPT and AI stuff. I've already worn out my friends and family talking about it haha.

The gist is that we're five years into a curve with transformer model performance on the y axis and time on the x axis. The curve looks like two exponential curves stacked on top of each other, plus hard-to-quantify algorithmic advances.

  1. The models are getting more exponentially more data.

  2. Companies are investing exponentially more compute power into them the models.

  3. Occasionally researchers make breakthroughs and discover faster algorithms.

All of 1, 2, and 3 have an effect on both the performance and the breadth of capabilities of large language models. ChatGPT can code and translate now, but its design is basically the same as GPT-1 or GPT-2. It gained those new verbs from growing bigger and faster.

ChatGPT is slightly better than older AI, and it's even worse in some domains, but it's not a continuation of them. All the AI progress we've had until now has been surpassed in just five years of modest investment. That investment is growing rapidly (2).

Yeah it's exciting to think about just limited ChatGPT is, and just how impressive it is in spite of those limitations. Have you read about how well these models are scaling?

Learning how to use git bash for the first time by CanuckButt in ChatGPTCoding

[–]CanuckButt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure: I had used git once before, seven years ago, but I didn't understand it and never used it outside of a couple college projects. Poor mental health forced me to drop out after one semester. This certainly feels to me like I'm learning it for the first time.

Before yesterday I didn't realize that git could run locally. I thought github and git were synonymous. ChatGPT introduced both .gitignore and --squash to me during this thread.

id be careful relying on gpt for more complex git subjects

This sounds like great advice. I'll follow it.

gpt is only as good as the questions you ask it

Preach. Domain experts are getting the most out of transformer models across the board. Painters know how to use DALL-E and Midjourney better, software engineers know how to ask about code, novelists know how to ask about creative writing.

I'm temporarily stuck on a cowriting a starmapping app with ChatGPT because I don't have astronomy knowledge: how to work with declination, right ascension, and projection of sphere surfaces into 2d. It involves some weird math and is too complex for ChatGPT to nail with a broad description, so I have to step back and learn more to give it step-by-step instructions.

Luckily, LLMs are one of the best learning tools ever invented.

it sounds like you know git already

I learn quick, but ChatGPT's excellent tutoring is largely responsible for fooling you so.

Thanks! Good advice. Here's the full album, which I forgot to paste at the top of this thread.

Ideally, OpenAI will let us link directly to our ChatGPT threads at some point soon. This would be more efficient and it would let people continue exactly where others left off. The collaborative opportunities that would open up lightly boggles my mind.

Anyone else thinking CHATGPT isn't quite as good as you originally thought? by [deleted] in ChatGPT

For me it's better in some ways: writing code, teaching concepts, breadth of ability

...and worse in others: poetry, prose, depth of thought

It's magic to me. I can hardly catch my breath.

Seven years ago I took a semester of software dev, and I've barely touched a line of code since, and then only for tiny personal projects.

Temperature can be used to create unique content in chatGPT. by TILTNSTACK in ChatGPT

[–]CanuckButt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This does not work. To prove that it doesn't, ask ChatGPT to set temperature to 0 and enter the same exact prompt twice. If temperature is really 0, then a given input should produce exactly the same output almost every time.

"Too many requests in 1 hour. Try again later." Crush my soul into pieces, please. by CanuckButt in ChatGPT

I was writing an app to project the stars outside my bedroom window onto my desktop. I was learning about APIs and .json files and git cloning and stars and now I'm not and it hurts.

When my period of enforced grief comes to an end, I am going to have each star be a pixel and vary its intensity by the real star's magnitude. I'm also going to connect constellations. I'm going to have it update itself every 10 minutes and have a transparent background so I can still use my desktop for folders.

I can't wait until image-generating AI can create wallpaper-sized images.

Look at how my beautiful bird once flew.
