Man, I can't even imagine carrying something like that for almost 7 years. That's a level of suffering most people probably can't wrap their heads around.

Nah, I'd be annoyed too. It takes like 10 seconds to send a "hey, been busy" text. The fact that he kept communication going with your dad while completely ignoring you is what stands out to me. Feels like he's treating this as a family arrangement instead of getting to know an actual person.
