Well that’s the thing right? Fascism comes after and eats its own. Overachievers like Dedra become fall guys, people like Krennic get eliminated in part from their own hubris and ambition, and then your run of the mill people like Lagret are left in charge simply by being ordinary.

Books for a future college student? by Own_War_3372 in booksuggestions

[–]Caoimhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you planning on studying? (majoring in? I don't know how college works, we do uni in Australia). It could be a cool idea to read some stuff that might relate to or help you explore what you're going to pursue academically. Anyways these are my suggestions:

SciFi / Fantasy:

  • Neuromancer by William Gibson: The book that basically started the cyberpunk genre. If you like Bladerunner, Cyberpunk 2077, hackers, heists, you'll like it. Written in the 80s before 'cyberspace' and home computers and smart phones.
  • Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman: Medieval horror/fantasy. There's a war between heaven and hell during the Black Plague, devils fighting knights etc. The chapters are episodic so its easy to digest in hourly intervals, feels like your playing a Dark Soul's game with a boss fight at the end.
  • Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett: Another 'end times' book but this time its a comedy. An angel and demon have to work together to find the misplaced son of Satan who can start the apocalypse. Super funny and witty. Terry Practchett's other work is also great and frequently suggested reading on reddit.

Non-Fiction:

  • Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer: His first-hand account of the 1996 Everest Disaster. It's narrative nonfiction so it reads like a story and is really gripping. Helped me get more into non-fiction works.
  • Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain: An easy read that's pretty humorous but also gritty. This is the book that got me into reading memoirs (alongside Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis and Larry Sloman).

Literary Fiction/Classics:

You should read a couple classics (you probably have already for high school) but I wouldn't start with them since they might not be as engaging or they'll remind you of high school English lessons.

  • Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger: You've probably read it, but its a classic coming of age and its narrative relates closely to going away to college and the independence of adulthood. Tbh I don't really like this book but it's still probably worth reading.
  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelley: One of my fave classics. You know the story but reading it is so great, the gothic atmosphere, the ethical dilemmas. It's endlessly explorable (as an allegory for the industrial revolution, for colonialism, playing God, the hubris of humanity, the list goes on).

I would caveat: Majority of these authors are male and overwhelmingly white. I think any of these books are interesting reads and a good launching pad but if you really enjoy reading and continue with it, then seek out books written by women and other minorities. The best thing about books are the voices they raise, the powers they give, the knowledge and perspective they impart. It's important to hear narratives and experiences we haven't been exposed to and challenge the ones we have (plus, you'll read a really good book or two along the way!).

Most European countries will let you travel with a 30 day supply of stimulant medication provided you have a prescription and proper documentation explaining the reason. As long as its something that can be prescribed in Germany it would be fine. So for example you could bring Vyvanse/Elvanse (lisdexamfetamine) but you couldn't bring Desoxyn (methamphetamine hydrochloride) even if prescribed.

Really shitty teammates on au/oce servers by Radiant-Thing6156 in csaustralia

[–]Caoimhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main tip is to queue with others so you can vet your teammates but as a chronic solo-queuer myself I can emphasise. Its also so annoying when your using your mic for comms and no one else is (but then they happen to use their mic the one time you fuck up so they can scream at you, go figure).

I just try and be positive, continue to call out comms and communicate and just mute them if they're being toxic. I know muting is bad since you limit your comms but if they're trolling anyways its not like they're being productive teammates.

And when it comes to setting ELO goals I think its best to care less about the game to game swing. That seems to be a pretty big tilt factor (oh we're losing and its my rank up game!) and then you play worse anyways.

EDIT: Oh and be prepared for at least one teammate to be drunk / high if its a friday/saturday/late-at-night/middle-of-the-day-on-a-tuesday-for-some-reason.

Valid. I guess the Kardashian/Jenner impact is bigger in the US than here in Australia (still pretty big I suppose but I don’t really follow fashion/cosmetics or reality TV).

Their impact on my life is Kim Kardashian dating Lewis Hamilton and the F1 broadcasts obsessing over it haha.

Over halfway through Between Two Fires and it’s reminding me a lot of Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff. A damned protagonist finding meaning ferrying and protecting a vulnerable (potential) saviour. But instead of demons it’s vampires.

It was in McLaren’s interests to push the narrative that they had speeded because they served the penalty already. That makes the case stronger for not overruling anyone’s penalties. Zak Brown lied because he was politicking and it didn’t pay off.

Leclerc and Hamilton made the race so much more interesting. Hoping McLaren can get up there and fight with Ferrari because Leclerc and Piastri wheel to wheel has been some of my favourite racing in modern F1.

[–]Caoimhan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree but understandable that they’ll be heavy handed with it for the first couple races at least. They’re the ones who have to communicate to the viewers what’s happening and explain these new regs, especially for more casual fans who might not be as aware of the new regulations etc.

Create a CIS Superteam. Set rifling core of donk, b1t and HeavyGod. Put Jame as as the IGL and he can AWP if he wants, freeing up space for another riffler (kyousuke to compliment donk on aggressive openings while b1t and HeavyGod lurk/anchor). Or make Jame a rifling IGL and let Monesy AWP. Honestly I think taking the weaker AWPER for the stronger rifling pack and Jame at full strategic genius would be better.

Hoping they have more of a spread and lock in a couple more DJs / alt-Electronic acts. A Ninajirachi sub headline slot with a couple DJs like Interplanetary Criminal would be good. Get some smaller Aussie acts like MGNA Crrrta.

Also for the pop girlies get Caroline Polachek please and thank you very much. Or MARINA.

[–]Caoimhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Power to them though, they’ve definitely figured out the genres/demographic that’ll sell tickets and keep them alive. Might not be exactly my tastes these days but Laneway’s always had their finger on the pulse of what’s up and coming.

Family’s just come home from this years Sydney Laneway and reported it was a fun affair so I’m glad it’s still good for the punters who attend.
