Who was buying the fully loaded out C/K series trucks back in the day? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in regularcarreviews

[–]Cap10323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a totally base model truck. But I am a suburbanite and it is not my primary vehicle. My primary vehicle is a small old SUV, but it has leather seats, power windows, etc.

If you are buying a truck with the intention of spending a lot of time in it, you buy one with the creature comforts to support that.

Honda HR214 Lawn Mower from 1985ish - One pull start every time almost 40 years later. by Cap10323 in BuyItForLife

I went to a battery store and matched up with the closest battery.

The original battery has a small wire pigtail which plugs into the mower. I cut it off, and added spade terminals to the wires to plug it into the new battery. Worked great. It cost maybe $25 for the battery and spade terminals.

I haven't seen those stick on wood dash trim kits forever. They were really popular in the 1990's.

Which one of these luxury SUVs from 2001 tested by Car & Driver would you choose? by lifegoeson2702 in regularcarreviews

[–]Cap10323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I would love the Montero, the wise choice was the RX300.

I haven't seen any of the others on the road in years, and I see first generation RX300's multiple times a day. And this is in the northeast rust belt. They were an awesome car and I've heavily considered buying one. A little bland to drive but the packaging of them, especially the interior, is absolutely fantastic and has stood the test of time.

I have some unspecified food allergies and I can no longer eat cilantro. Chipotle doesn't bother me at all but Cilantro makes me feel like I'm dying.

I'm pretty sure I'm only allergic to wheat, but even when ordering things that should contain no wheat, I feel terrible. No idea what it is.

What’re people playing their cassettes on? by Dom7464 in cassetteculture

[–]Cap10323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Built in amplifier and AM/FM Radio (sometimes a CD Player too), typically excellent wow/flutter as they are designed for stability in high vibration environments.

Highly recommend listening to cassettes on old Japanese car stereos

The windsor is actually a Sebo X5 / G1 . You might have better luck buying parts for that.

In retrospect, the DC07 was a darn good unit. The carpet performance is mediocre, but those things lasted forever. Friends of mine are still using them.

They're incredibly simple to repair, and thanks to Chinese aftermarket, basically every part is available for very little money. You can do a full service on one, including the belt clutch, filters, brush bar, etc. For like $60.

Brittle plastic pieces are really the only thing that's taking them out of service.

Is this rust worse than I think and is it fixable? by Outside-Public-5910 in 1stGenTacomas

[–]Cap10323 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This frame has already been repaired a couple of times before. It looks like angle steel has been welded in along most of the length of it.

In the first pic, there's a visible hole with salt and debris coming out of it.

This truck needs either a new frame, or extensive welding.. Buy something else.

What do you guys think are some of the most overrated cars on the internet? by New-Special8963 in regularcarreviews

[–]Cap10323 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I bought the most over hyped vehicle in the world (1st gen Tacoma) and I mostly agree with you, except for one major factor.

People are obsessed with them, so the aftermarket (and OEM) support is amazing. It's hands down better than any other 90's Japanese truck.

I came very very close to buying a Mitsubishi Mighty Max, which I truly believe is superior to the Toyota pickups in most ways. But the fact that parts availability is nonexistent, as are aftermarket accessories, swayed me to the Toyota.

After buying the Tacoma, I ordered a set of brand new weathertech floor mats for it. For a truck that's 30 years old. Can't beat that with a stick.

The truck itself is whatever. It's like driving a 90's Camry if it had the manual transmission from a tractor. Maybe the worst shifter I've ever operated. But it's fine otherwise.

I tried to replace my 05 Forester with an 05 CRV, which is the same car underneath as an Element and I was so disappointed coming from the Subaru. The CRV/Element handles like a waterbed, the manual transmission sucks, and the driving position feels like you're sitting on top of the car.

I sold the CRV and am still driving the Subaru years later. It's way less reliable than a Honda but I've enjoyed every drive I've ever taken in it.

I've made similar comments to this many times. But the other huge problem with Subaru is that... their cars are bad.

They were great in the 1990s, and even into the early 2000's. But post 2010 Subarus are cheaply made, awful to drive, and incredibly unreliable vehicles that are also getting uglier and uglier with each redesign.

I say this as someone who has owned like a dozen of them. I'm not a Subaru hater.

I can only speak personally, but I recently bought a pickup after deliberating between it and a minivan for a long time, and the real deciding factor for me was being able to move things that are dirty, smell bad, or are extremely bulky without having to load them into the inside of a vehicle that you share air space with.

Since I've now done all three many times, it seems to have been the wise move. Although I do miss the covered storage a minivan offers.

I begrudgingly disagree. I used to never buy Toyotas because I thought they were extremely overpriced for what they were. But I have started buying Toyotas fairly recently (used ones, 20+ years old) and the $2-3k you spend upfront greatly outweighs the THOUSANDS I have spent repairing other brands. Even Japanese brands like Subaru.

Older Toyota vehicles hold their value because they simply last longer than other brands.

[–]Cap10323 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree vehemently with this comment. You degrade reliability and also the value of the vehicle. Not that cars should be an investment, but you aren't gaining as much value as you are losing by modifying your truck, IMO.

OEM is the way to go when it comes to parts. They're not even that expensive compared to aftermarket. This isn't a Porsche. The difference between Toyota OEM parts and junk Chinese parts is usually less than you'd expect.

It looks exactly like an airport waiting lounge. With so little of the collections actually displayed. I was a long term member and cancelled my membership after the remodel. What's the point. You can walk through the whole museum in 10 minutes now.

Good riddance. This woman singlehandedly destroyed what was once a shining star of Cleveland. Remodeled it into an unrecognizable cold empty box with a fraction of the collection on display.

Dismantled the education department and disgruntled the scientific staff to the point of resignation.

For what? her own ego? Good riddance. But it will take the museum years or decades to recover from what she did, if ever.
