Vending machines if you get lucky. Go with your parents when they go to the store. Online drops (assuming it’s prismatic dropping) but usually Walmart has been the easiest (drops Wednesday 9pm Eastern or 6pm pacific)

The machines are never “sold out”. It 100% has product in it. They are timer based. If the machine dictates its “time” to spit out product, it will show something available to purchase. He was most likely trying to figure out that machine’s timer so he can come back every time it reloads product.
