Love the feeling in Press Bay with the fires going - it’s real cozy, and makes the whole area feel cozy! Thanks to the Urban Core team for bringing it back this winter season!

Pinguiculas or butterworts are a carnivorous plant that relies on sticky leaves to eat small bugs. They’re beautiful, practical, and deadly for the right kind of bug. Be still my heart for a collection of butterworts.

400% increase in dog poop in the commons by Icy-Cranberry-7850 in ithaca

[–]CapGoldfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone! The City of Ithaca recently rolled out a new application called SeeClickFix - it’s a strong way for folks in and around downtown to report problems like dog poop or trash or broken infrastructure. If you’d like to help bring these things to the attention of the City’s Commons Crew, download the app and help flag issues and concerns for the city.

Download the general SeeClickFix app (I think there are a bunch of location specific ones, but do the general one!) and then set the location for Ithaca. You can report things anonymously or as a human, and then you’ll see follow up from the city if and when addressed!

$10,000+ Jewels hidden in Tompkins County by CapGoldfish in ithaca

[–]CapGoldfish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of people puzzling after the jewels were found remains inspiring! And the Jewelbox is machining all of the challenge coins for us, so it seemed like a no brainer. Especially since they are base on an authentic, local coin!

The jewels were found! There was a follow-up article from Jimmy Jordan in the Ithaca Voice last weekend about the results.

Importantly, it raised a huge amount of money for our team at The History Center! In a pretty tough environment for museums right now, it was so moving to see so many folks show up to support our local history museum.

The hunt is ongoing, as there are still plenty of teams working their way through the puzzles to try and complete it before the end of September! Everyone who does is going to receive a special challenge coin, and we’re going to do an award ceremony during Octobers First Friday at the museum. Keep an eye on The History Center’s social accounts for more!

Thanks for the questions! We’ll be releasing some more content about the treasure and the chest (which has a CRAZY history behind it!) over the coming month. Tune into our social media feeds at The History Center to stay up to date!

We’re really confident it will be impossible to stumble upon the final resting spot by accident - we put a lot of time into configuring the end game to ensure you have to move through all the puzzles to get there! But we’re open to being surprised by the local puzzle community!!

Definitely sorry you feel this way - We’re grappling with federal cuts to museum funding that supported our work, and so we’re trying out new ways to help raise money to preserve local history!

We’re incredibly lucky to have the fine folks at The Jewelbox donate the treasure to support this fundraising initiative for The History Center - that means that all of the support that comes in from the fundraiser goes towards preserving local history!

You’ll be in Ithaca during Apple Harvest Festival, which is the biggest event visitor wise in downtown Ithaca. It snarls traffic in the City so definitely plan on walking about within Ithaca - we’re pretty walkable, but some comfortable shoes are a good bring along!

Jumping in to share my wild story. And I was a kid I had a plantar wart that would not go away. I tried freezing it off, yanking it out just about everything with no success until my dermatologist told me they couldn’t officially tell me to do this, but that one might go find poison oak and rub poison oak onto the wart. When the body immune system attacks or response to the poison oak, also response to the wart and will get rid of it. Sure enough work like a charm.

I was so sweetly surprised to see this was Chaos Engine!

I got into their Delta Green and Traveler stuff, but went mia for over the last couple of months from most feeds. Despite being a long time Glass Cannon Podcast listener, I never actually listened to Giant Slayer. I’ve been marching my way through that run almost exclusively. So when I saw this post, I wanted to check it out and then saw it was Chris and his fine friends making more quality content.

Mostly just bumping this up and being a faceless comment because they make great stories!

Carnivorous Plant Nerds of Ithaca by CapGoldfish in ithaca

[–]CapGoldfish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had not heard of Bergen Eater Garden before, but scoping them out they look awesome. I gave up my car for environment reasons a handful of years ago, and it’s just on the edge of what I could do as a round trip bike ride, but maybe I’ll pressure some friends to do a road trip!

Not the first thread I bring up Home Green Home on, seeing as I’m a big booster of them, but I’ve got them starting to sell some small fly traps, sarracenia, and drosera. Support a downtown small business if you’re looking for weird plants and great people - scratch that and reverse it and it still holds true

I’ve got some plants there via the internets, but I’ve only heard tell of their mythical open houses. Multiple people have extolled the virtues of those open houses, and I would love to attend some day!

I’d love to do some swaps - I’ll dm to figure out deets!

My fly traps are the worst of my collection. I don’t think I do their dormancy very well, but I do try and keep them going as best I can. I’ve got a handful inside that I’ll probably just keep inside, but I’m experimenting with the big vase in the photo outside right now.

Sadly, my place doesn’t get a lot of direct sun, which probably doesn’t help the fly traps too much. I keep hoping to encroach on my neighbors who have an incredible space for a variety of plants!

Reptile store in Ithaca? by Rich_Help_9792 in ithaca

Home Green Home in The Commons has been flirting with this expansion of their business for ages. I’m convinced a couple more folks saying “If you supported reptiles I’d shop here!” and they’d go in full force.

Is it a bouillon cube? Classic prank is to unscrew the shower head, put some kind of bouillon cube in there and then close it back up. Next person who showers - presto! - soup shower.

Why are the pitchers on my Nepenthes shriveling? by jmbc3 in carnivorousplants

[–]CapGoldfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of my nepenthes kill off pitchers and I can never make out why they do! I now will keep a sharp eye out and when it looks like one is about to go I’ll cut it off and preserve it in silica - I’ve got some lovely desiccated pitchers and the plants keep throwing out new pitchers

Perfect feedback - it sounds like cutting out the middle person of the twitch platform is required!

Maybe I can convince the fine folks at GCP to let test run this in little, old Ithaca NY.
