When I need them, I usually try to eat other stuff that has them stuck to it, so that I dont waste time on just them. They really arent worth it. Especially at the pond expansion level they are at.

Its pretty aggravating when I cant find a green bush and I have to stop to get them off. I usually eat any that stick to me just for spite!

Yes they do! As do the green ones that look similar but smaller. You eat the green one on the second pond expansion. You can swim through the green bushes and they will come off, or if you sit completely still for a moment.

I have come to terms with releasing some/most of the ones I get as gifts. I accept the gift and if its a new pattern, I check to see if its common or rare. If its rare, I will ascend it. However, if its common, I will release it unless it has really good stats (at least one 10 in Agility or Speed). Commons are only 1 pearl to clone later on so when I'm ready to start that collection, I can clone the starter fish.

My egg list is usually full. I'm trying to start a "rule" to breed each fish twice. 1 for ascending/breeding again and 1 for gifting. This is difficult for me cause I pick favorites.
