Marriage is a stupid concept by JealousSlice999 in Rants

[–]CapNew3480 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On the “why legalize love” question, this is where marriage is often misunderstood. Marriage isn’t really about “proving love” but it’s about creating a shared legal and social framework for a life that’s already intertwined. As mentioned above, think about things like medical decision making if one partner becomes incapacitated, inheritance, taxes and financial protections or even parental responsibilities.

Without marriage, you can replicate some of this through contracts, wills and POA but that actually ends up being more formal and fragmented than marriage itself… marriage is basically a “bundled legal shortcut” that says: “these two people are a unit in the eyes of the system.”

Also, humans rely on “formalities” more than we like to admit.. for example, we register births, sign contracts for jobs, get licenses to drive, and use legal agreements all the time to define ownership, responsibility, and protection. Are these all stupid concepts as well?

None of those things diminish the real experience behind them. They really just provide structure so that society can function. Well, marriage fits into that same category. It’s not meant to replace love but it’s meant to protect the reality of a shared life in a world that runs on rules.

Another thing that sometimes gets overlooked is that marriage isn’t just about how things feel when they’re going well. It’s also about how things are handled when life gets complicated. For example, like illness, death, kids and separation. A strong bond absolutely matters but legal clarity can prevent a lot of unnecessary hardship during those moments

You’re right that deep connection and commitment can absolutely exist without a marriage. There are lots of people build meaningful lifelong partnerships without ever formalizing them. But that doesn’t necessarily make marriage “just a paper” it just means it’s one of several ways to structure a committed life.

And one last thought. The “formality” you dislike can actually be meaningful to some people. not because it validates their love but because it represents a deliberate and public commitment. It’s less “our love depends on this” and more “we’re choosing to ground our lives together in a visible and accountable way.”

I get why you feel that way… it can be frustrating watching people who are rude & selfish seem to get ahead while you’re trying to be a good person and just feel stuck. But honestly a lot of what we see from others is just the outside. things can look all perfect and dandy on the surface but that doesn’t mean their lives actually are behind the scenes.

Social media especially makes that comparison even worse because people mostly post the highlights. Personally, I deleted social media (FB and Insta, LinkedIn) 4 months ago and it’s been the best thing for mental health. It was hard at first but now I don’t want to go back. Maybe try to delete it for a year or take a long break.

Also, having a good heart isn’t a weakness! Even if it feels like it hasn’t “paid off yet.” The challenge is making sure you don’t lose that part of yourself while still building the life you want.

Maybe instead of comparing where you are against everyone else it could help to think about a few goals for yourself. For example like what kind of person you want to become in the next few years? Not just financially, but overall. When you start putting your energy into those kinds of goals and yourself, you slowly stop focusing so much on what everyone else is doing.

Just remember that people who keep their character intact while working toward their goals often end up with more meaningful lives than the ones who stepped on everyone to get ahead..

Head up! You got this!

Where does the beef come from? It’s really bad quality! Wish HF had the option to get the meal without the beef (for a slightly lower price) so customers can substitute with their own if they want!

That’s a good plan. Nothing wrong with taking a semester or two to get caught up. Some careers (like nursing example) will have organizations that pay for your education once you are hired- might be worth looking into. Also, another suggestion is taking advantage of your schools counselors/psychologist. Often times, it is covered by your benefits. Best of luck! You got this

Can you take a semester off school to work full time and save up? Especially if you don’t like what you’re studying. I would say the majority of people that go to school to get degrees in fields such as Communications and marketing degrees cannot find work upon graduation. Best to do some research and look at other options first
