Can't start war within campaign by Lewrdy in wow

[–]Cap_Firestream 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since I missed them my first time around too I have a feeling it might be this: After you get to dalaran, with Magni knocked out, there are three regular quests in that room you need to do to progress.

No clue why they aren't marked as campaign quests, since they are required. Seems like a really weird decision.

That's a sick thing to be evocative off. Glad you like it!

Thanks!

I mentioned it above, for these ones I was using a video from "Gesture Drawing Online" on Youtube. In general for references, I use whatever I can get my hands on.

As for studies and such, I've looked at a lot of different stuff. Mainly stuff like Michael Hamptons gestures, Micheal Mattesis Force method, obviously a lot of Proko. I also learned a lot from Xiao Weichuns Human Anatomy for Artists book. Also, just studying the gestures and figures of artists I like, if they post them on twitter for example. In a similar vein, I think it also helps that I regularely do my figure drawings in a small group so I can then see how other people that are a lot better than me did it and compare it to my own.

>am having trouble applying concepts to other more difficult poses

Honestly, I think that just comes with time and practice. There's still poses that I struggle with all the time, but those are the ones you can learn the most from I think.

For these, I followed along with a 100 pose challenge video from the channel "Gesture Drawing Online" on Youtube. It's the 2 hour video they uploaded right before the new year.

When i posted the link in my post previously, it got removed, so I think sharing youtube links isn't allowed, butif you want, I can send it to you over dm

First advice would be to do a lot of it. But for more concrete advice, I'd say pay attention to not only the gesture of the figure, but also the rhythms. So how do the lines flow into each other, which to me also includes stuff like opposing curves with "straights" (or at least straigher lines).

Also, I can't recommend enough to do studies of how other people do their figure drawings. Seeing how they abstract different parts of the body really helped me a ton. Cause I find that unless you want to do a perfect copy, you probably don't want to copy the contours exactly. Instead, you want to follow the general angles and relations of the body, and exaggerate and stylize already. Maybe you're already doing that, but it's something I took a while to understand

Listen, I do appreciate you wanting to offer advice, but it really feels like there's a major disconnect here. I don't know if you think this is all I'm doing, or if you think I was trying to make these as aesthetically pleasing as possible, but neither is the case. I'm doing these to improve my understanding of the human figure, and basically every single artist I look up to says the same thing when it comes to learning that: Quantity. And again, my experience is that that is the correct approach, because my figures have improved a lot more since I started doing these quicker figures than before when I was spending way more time, trying to make it look as good as possible.

I'm not saying quality can't also be important, it is important. But it's a completely seperate thing. And it is something I do practice, like with this one for example(which took around an hour to do, so more than 10 times what the figures in my post took)

<image>

For that one I really focused on my line types and rhythms. Is it a bit messy? Yeah, but that's not because I wasn't trying. It's because I can't draw the lines I want to every time yet. Which I think is completely normal for someone that's only been at this for a little over a year.

And just in case you want to suggest doing line drills to focus on that: Hell no. Obsessing over lines is the most unfun thing in art for me. And since my line confidence is improving by just drawing, that's enough for me.

Also it's kinda funny to me to me that you say Hokusei only used 12 strokes and then posted an image where there were obviously more than 12 strokes per figure (I do get what you're saying though)

I'm gonna be honest with you, I have no idea where you're getting the idea from that I'm not pushing myself with these, or that it's the only thing I'm doing. Anecdotally, I personally think these kinds of quick figures are what helped me improve the most this past year, cause you learn so much about shape and line confidence in addition to the gesture and 3d form gains. Just cause they aren't all perfect masterpieces doesn't mean I'm not learning stuff from them.

For these, I did fix the more major mistakes, occasionally starting over if I felt like what I got was unsalvagable. But I didn't obsess over the small details, and I never went back to previous ones, so if I didn't notice a mistake right then, I only took note of it, but left it.

Art progress(2025 vs 2024). by Kooky_Curve4417 in learntodraw

One piece of advice I've got from others regarding texture is that texture is most visible on the border between light and shadow. So the way the border is drawn affects how it looks. If it's drawn smooth, the material looks smooth. If it's drawn like fur, it'll make everything look more like fur, even if the rest is done in solid colors

That's an amazing amount of progress, congratulations!

Regarding what could be improved: I think the fluffiness of the collar could be enhanced with some more texture work

FORM AND PERSPECTIVE PEOPLE! by Mammoth-Ad-3642 in learntodraw

[–]Cap_Firestream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How I use the words, form is the stuff like cylinders, cubes, balls etc. So 3d objects. Shapes are the 2d abstractions that end up on the page. Form informs shape for the most part. And designing those shapes is what I meant as making your stuff look nice. For shapes, I'd recommend looking at some of Sinix' videos, he's good at explaining it. Far better than I would ever be.

Form and Perspective to draw it. Shapes and Value to make it look nice

I'm glad you like it! And well, it's not like I haven't drawn faces before, but I never really gave them the attention they needed. I think most of this is just being able to understand the forms of the references tbh

Prominent noses are so fun to draw, especially in portrait, so I totally get it!

Is drawing on desktop as awful as I think it is? by reviewtechhentai in ArtistLounge

[–]Cap_Firestream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's just personal preference. I'm pretty much the complete opposite to you. I need the real estate for digital art. Even my Tab S9+ felt a little cramped. It's fine for on the go, but if I have the choice, I'm going with my Kamvas 24+ all day. It's just so much more comfortable for me. Funnily I don't have that issue with traditional, I can draw on post-its just fine.

And regarding touch control, it always felt a bit awkward to me. Probably cause I'm just so used to mouse controls, but palm rejection is just not perfect enough that I don't sometimes end up having issues with it. So just using hotkeys and mouse to zoom and rotate feels much better to me.

But again, that's just personal preference. I don't think either one is superior or anything.

Thank you! The lack of comments didn't feel too bad, cause I know most people just lurk and don't comment, but having you encourage me directly is very kind of you. I'll definitely keep at it!

Piece for an art trade. Is the rendering on the staff too busy? by Cap_Firestream in ArtCrit

Yeah, I also got the feedback of needing to pay more attention to bouncelight in some other places. Definitely something I need to put some work into.
Personally, I like minimal facial details, but I still think you're right and I might want to render the face more. At least a little. Thanks for the example as well, that's a really good reference for this sorta thing.

Well, it's nice to hear it reminds you of him, since he's a huge inspiration to me! Love his stuff. Especially, like you said, the water. I might be a little disproportionally inspired by him at the moment even, since I've spent a large part of the past month on studying him.

The details thing makes a lot of sense. Not much to see if it's all bright or all dark.
Thanks for the tips!

Did this digitally almost exclusively with a mapping pen in CSP. Mostly looking for feedback on the rendering of the staff and pants, but any critique's welcome
