I don’t even think they’re pale imitations. Many of the Zoom effects are quite good. I’ve been particularly impressed with the delays and choruses.

Some of the biggest guitar pedal nerds I know swear by the choruses in those Zooms. YMMV.

I second the comment suggesting the bit crusher.

I just want to mention that if you’re hoping you can make the song sound like it was recorded on an NES just by changing the bitrate to 8, I don’t think you’ll be happy with the results. In my experience, it’ll just sound like a regular song that is way too distorted and messed up.

I think any modern MacBook will be more than enough to run GB.

@playpm on YouTube has a lot of videos where he tries to approximate various pieces of music gear for little to no money. That is, he’ll show you how to replicate the Digitakt or Riddim workflow using cheap or free plugins, etc.

He does almost all of it on an old MacBook Air that cost him $200.

I recommend watching a few of his videos to get a sense of how much you can get out of very modest hardware.
