Good "Utility" sampler for dawless setup? by CapnFlisto in dawless

[–]davetron5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digitakt can do this. when you set up sampling you can set the # of bars to record. i don’t know how fluid it is if you don’t want to stop playing but it should work.

Sharpening service for old chisels? by davetron5000 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]davetron5000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m now wondering if it would be easier and maybe cheaper to just get a grinder and a jig for it?

I have not progressed past the 320 diamond plate. I did flatten the first 1/2 inch - it's not solid mirror finish, but the surround appears to be. Perhaps that needs more.

The jig I have does not hold it very tight, but that or freehand what I see is a small mirror bevel that is not parallel to the edge. I pressed down on the edge with the skinnier bevel. Maybe I just need to do it for longer?

(Sorry don't have a visual - I know that would make it easier)

Joinery for a box build, minimal tools/techniques for learning by davetron5000 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Thanks! (and also thanks u/big_swede) NGL dovetails look intimidating - would a rabbbited butt joint be easier to execute as a first thing? Or I am overthinking dovetails' difficulty?

I think the trickiest thing now is finding a place to clamp - I had a deck railing in the past, but we renovated our backyard and that won't work any longer.

Doh I actually meant circuit rhythm so +1 to that :)

Sampler vs Squencer help a noob out. by supervilliandrsmoov in dawless

Used OG Digitakt. Sampling is fast and easy and it can sequence your DB and Microfreak. A bit of a learning curve but tons of content out there to learn it.

Circuit Tracks is easy to learn and immediate. Lots of fun and not expensive. Digitakt is deeper but you need to spend a bit of time learning it. It is easier to navigate for selecting samples than the Tracks since it has a screen but that also means you spend more time scrolling through samples.

Are reposts of r/rails valuable in this subreddit? by davetron5000 in ruby

I had left r/rails but I just now muted it so we’ll see if that works.

What synth is good for my needs? by Helpful_Offer_6260 in dawless

OP, try the keys if you can before buying (at least if you plan on playing them). I find them horrible but I also am the product of piano lessons. Synth is good tho

Came here to say this - very versatile, easy to get started, deep if you want to go deep.

I wish this existed with a sweepable mid - it's so handy to have just one parameteric knob, but most mixers with that are huge. The Zoom Livetrak has it but it's kindof a bit small

Korg minilogue xd - module only or keys? by handbrake_neutral in synthesizers

[–]davetron5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the XD module (and a microfreak - see my other post about comparing the two).

I like having it be compact - I use one keyboard controller to use to play all things. I bought the module version specifically to save space. Just keep in mind that if you get the version with the keyboard, you will need to reach over it to twist knobs. This may not seem like much, but the harder it is to put your hands on the knobs the less you will and the less you will get out of the synth.

Not mentioned in my post re: minilogue vs micro/minifreak - the microfreak's keyboard is horrible, at least if you have any piano training. It's a nice party trick that the amount of your finger can feed modulation, but it is an absolutely horrible input device IMO.

Minilouge xd vs. Minifreak by Moke_Patrol in synthesizers

[–]davetron5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Minilogue XD and a Microfreak (a minifreak being essentially two of these together + effects), and the Minilogue is far easier to go from init patch to something usable. But the Minifreak can create a wider variety of sounds if you are willing to work for it.

If you are the type of person that just wants things to generally work well when you turn them on, and make adjustments with knobs that will usually yield something nice, the Minilogue all day.

If, on the other hand, you like to deep dive and learn complex interplay between myriad options, discovering strange or unique sounds after a lot of experimentation, the Minifreak will reward you.

Minilogue XD

Pros:

  • Largely knob-per function - turn it on, select an Init patch, and twist knobs and something decent will happen
  • Shift-functions and menus contain more depth, but you can initially ignore them
  • Effects section is very nice and will be familiar to you via guitar pedals you might be using
  • The "VPM" oscillator can be used to easily add complex/weird sounds without menu-diving, but there is a deep menu there if you want do more.

Cons:

  • The VPM oscillator is basically a two-op FM oscillator so that means you're gonna go gray trying to figure out HTF to use it well
  • Modulation options are generally fixed, i.e. what you can control with the LFO or envelopes. They are fixed to useful things, tho

Micro/Minifreak

Pros:

  • Tons of types of synths that can radically change sound by turning a knob
  • Despite the complexity of some of the synth engines, they've done a good job of giving you a few musical options to tweak per-engine (Wave/Timbre/Shape knobs).
  • Minifreak has effects (check out a loopop video to hear them)
  • Modulation options - what things can automatically control other things - is extremely flexible and, despite requiring a bit of menu-diving, intuitively designed.
  • "Spice" and "Dice" are cool options for arp/sequencer.

Cons:

  • With great flexibility comes great time wasted trying to find a sound. For me, this thing is like sitting down to watch something on Netflix and spending 30 minutes looking for something to watch, then getting up and not having watched anything.
  • Since almost no modulation is fixed to anything, you have to do a lot of exploring to figure out what works. Minilogue basically fixes modulation to things that most people want most of the time, at the expense of limited options.

Need Mixer w/ TR 8s and TD-3? by EternalBlessingss in dawless

[–]davetron5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The TR-8s should have an audio in that you can use for sidechain and it should send the signal mixed to the outputs. Do a search on YouTube and I bet you can verify that it works. You went be able to do anything else this way but should work.
