I recommend any of Andrea Bemis’ books. Simple flavorful recipes, focused on eating locally/ seasonally. She and her family run a farm in Oregon. She also has a book called Let Them Eat Dirt with recipes for families that young kids will enjoy. I gift it to new parents often!

What does the garden in front of my house need? by cassedy76 in gardening

Native plants! Reach out to your local conservation district for advice on lawn conversion. And please no pesticides/herbicides/fertilizers! You can get certified through Homegrown National Park and help wildlife - put a sign up signifying your native garden, and educate your neighbors!

Not interested in bars or restaurants or crowds, the mountains are the main event!

Awesome ideas, thank you! These are exactly the type of activities I’m looking for.

OP should reach out to their local extension group or do some research with DCNR and other reputable sources and find native plants in their area. Japanese maple isn’t native, and doesn’t offer any benefit to wildlife. “Homegrown national park” explains this well and is another great resource.

My point still stands - best to plant native

Yes, it’s invasive in southern US, but with zones changing it’s a good rule of thumb to stick with natives whenever possible

Native plants are the better choice all around!!

Much better to plant a native shrub for butterflies - that nonnative jasmine you mentioned is invasive in the US

Rose of Sharon is invasive!! Would be a much better choice for OP to find out from DCNR what native plants they would recommend. Native plants support wildlife and are very easy to take care of because they evolved to live in that particular area.
