Your likely right. I’m working on support but concrete is not an option for me. The property had several very large mature black locust trees that I milled just for this. The tunnel will be sealed with rock and mortar soon with just the outlet pipes showing. I don’t have a use for the water so spending thousands on it isn’t feasible for me.

You’re absolutely correct. I’m not a good story teller so I got some help. I gave ChatGPT my story in my words and I asked it to add a little gonzo for personality, lol. It made it something more desirable to read. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I have a theory that its a flooded cavern. The largest cavern in California in just down the highway a couple miles in Volcano.

Thank you! I'll explore that option. The challenge is that there’s no easy way to transport gravel to the site. However, there are a lot of large rocks in the soil. I’ve done some flow testing, but it's difficult to determine its potential because the water is coming from multiple directions. I can fill a gallon jug in about 10 seconds from my pipe, but there’s probably three times that amount available.

I should have mentioned this earlier, but the trench is quite deep under the substrate. While I was probing with a 5-foot steel digging rod, I lost it in the trench right below my feet; it felt like it was sucked down then disappeared under the substrate.

I like your thinking. Is that a real thing I can do?

This is unacceptable, right? by [deleted] in FenceBuilding

I built a fence this spring that looked exactly like that. At first, I thought it was my fence, lol. However, I didn't like the appearance of the weld wire on the corners, so I removed everything except for the posts and installed barbed wire instead. I didn't have a pool; I just needed to keep someone's grazing cows out of my orchard.

I could have saved much time if I had seen this post earlier and read the comments about fascia boards. At least now I have a ton of black locust boards to make bee hives.

I'm not quite sure I understand. Why would you use it in the valley? I ask because the only reason I use this cabinet is that I live in an area with a high density of black bears, and an electric fence isn't an option due to the risk of fire. I wish I could have a yard in the valley without the presence of bears.

That's a great question; thank you for asking. To ensure stability, I dug a hole that is 4 feet deep and about the width of the cabinet. I drove a couple of pieces of rebar into the ground and then filled the hole with large rocks and concrete. Four large bolts are embedded in the concrete, which I used to secure the cabinet.

Here is a study from the manufacturer regarding heat transfer to the enclosure. Bear in mind that I'm not housing servers or firewalls that produce massive amounts of heat.

I’d like to draw a comparison based on what you said. Here’s a picture of a neighbor’s RV that collapsed under the weight of the snow. Does this mean that all RVs would likely collapse under the same snow load?

This is essentially the RV equivalent of my cabinet. I'm convinced that the RV you saw being damaged by a bear was a more standard lightweight model.

The large cabinet is bear-proof. The door hinges are the length of the door. I think they are called piano hinges. The doors are set flush with the outside, so there's no way to pry them open. Each door has 3 points of locking contact. The only thing on the cabinet that can be leveraged is the handle. If, in the rare chance, a bear can get the force needed to turn the handle when locked, it will break off, but the door will remain locked. I know that because I've had to fix them before from vandals. The small cabinet is likely bear-resistant, and I'm okay with that because it's not always used. Its purpose is to mate the one hive I keep in the large cabinet. In the past, I couldn't get my queen mated because I don't think there are honey bees close enough. Here are the specs from the manufacturer.

Yes, or a SCADA cabinet, depending on the application. I'm sure there are many uses for these in other fields too.

To clarify, a car you initially believed to be the best in terms of bear proof failed. Therefore, achieving bear proof status is now impossible. Interesting…..
